FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- The No. 10-ranked Augsburg College wrestling team went 3-2 in five dual meets over the weekend, finishing in sixth place at the National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III National Duals, held Friday and Saturday at Memorial Coliseum.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg (7-3 overall), ranked No. 10 in the latest NWCA Division III national poll, opened with a 35-6 win over No. 11-ranked Cornell (Iowa), but dropped a 24-12 dual to top-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater before scoring a 23-12 win over No. 15-ranked Alma (Mich.) on Friday. On Saturday, the Auggies claimed a 23-13 win over No. 5-ranked Mount Union (Ohio) in the consolation semifinals. In the fifth-place match, the Auggies and No. 6-ranked Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestled to an 18-18 tie, but UW-La Crosse gained a 19-18 win on the first tiebreaker criteria (six bout wins to Augsburg's four).
• Defending 125-pound national champion Mike Fuenffinger (SR, Hibbing, Minn.), ranked No. 1 nationally in the Division III national rankings at 125, went 5-0 on the weekend with a first-period pin and two major-decision victories. He is now 20-1 on the season with 16 bonus-point victories (five pins, three technical falls, eight major decisions).
• No. 7-ranked heavyweight Donny Longendyke (SO, Vadnais Heights, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) also went 5-0 on the weekend, claiming two pins and a major-decision win. He also had a 4-0 win over No. 8-ranked Anthony Edgren of UW-Whitewater on Friday. A transfer from Division I Nebraska, Longendyke is now 22-2 on the season with 16 bonus-point victories (12 pins, one technical fall, three major decisions).
• Chad Bartschenfeld (SR, Amery, Wis.) went 4-0 at 133 pounds with a pin, improving to 14-7 on the season.
• No. 9-ranked 149-pounder Will Keeter (SR, Twin Falls, Idaho) went 3-2 on the weekend with a pin, facing three ranked opponents during the tournament. He is now 17-7 on the season.
• No. 8-ranked 197-pounder Matt Hechsel (SR, Apple Valley, Minn.) also went 3-2 on the weekend with two major decisions, moving to 16-5 on the year.
• Eric Hensel (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) had pins in both of his 174-pound matches on Saturday, including a 1:55 pin of UW-La Crosse's Sean O'Neil. Hensel is now 13-5.


BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Augsburg is now 44-12 in NWCA Division III National Duals competition since 2002. In its 56 Division III National Duals meets, Augsburg has outscored its competition by a 1,570-to-647 margin, an average score of 28.0-to-11.6.
• Augsburg also appeared in five NWCA National Duals competitions prior to the 2002 season, when the defending Division III national champion was invited to compete against Division I squads. Augsburg is 49-21 all-time in NWCA National Duals competitions.

UP NEXT
• Augsburg competes in two meets next Saturday (1/17) at 9 a.m. The Auggie varsity will compete at the Cornell (Iowa) Matman Open, and the White Team (junior varsity) will compete at the Minnesota West Community and Technical College-Worthington Open.

MINNEAPOLIS -- No. 10-ranked Augsburg College will compete at the National Wrestling Coaches Association/Cliff Keen Division III National Duals, presented by Hibiclens and The Marines, this weekend at the Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, Ind.

Auggie action begins on Friday at 11 a.m., as No. 8-seed Augsburg faces either No. 11-ranked Cornell (Iowa) or unranked Washington and Jefferson (Md.). Action continues on Friday and Saturday, with the championship match slated for 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. 

Nineteen of the 24 teams in the expanded Division III field are ranked in the top 30 in the latest NWCA Division III national poll, including 12 of the top 15-ranked teams.

Since the NWCA began the Division III National Duals in 2002, the trophy has rested at either Augsburg or Wartburg (Iowa). Augsburg has won the title five times (2002, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010), while Wartburg has won the crown eight times (2003, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014). Augsburg has placed second at the National Duals four times (2003, 2004, 2006, 2012), placed third twice (2008, 2011), and placed fourth in 2014.

Augsburg is 41-10 in NWCA Division III National Duals competition since 2002. Augsburg also appeared in five NWCA National Duals competitions prior to the 2002 season, when the defending Division III national champion was invited to compete with Division I squads. Augsburg is 46-19 all-time in NWCA National Duals competition. In its 51 Division III National Duals meets, Augsburg has outscored its competition by a 1,459-573 margin, an average score of 28.6 to 11.2.
