LA CROSSE, Wis. -- Augsburg University, the No. 2-ranked team in the National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III national rankings, finished 3-1 in its competition at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Candlewood Suites Duals on Saturday at Mitchell Hall.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg wrestlers went 27-13 during the day, including 15 bonus-point decisions -- 10 pins, two technical falls and three major decisions. Meanwhile, the Auggies surrendered just three major decisions to their opponents.
• The Auggies opened the dual-meet event with a 26-16 win over No. 12-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater, collecting three pins and a technical fall in its five wins. The Auggies then topped Cornell (Iowa) 37-6, winning eight of 10 bouts, with three pins, a technical fall and two major decisions. Augsburg then won nine of 10 bouts, including four pins, in a 42-3 triumph over Elmhurst (Ill.). In the final match of the day, the Auggies were edged 17-16 by No. 8-ranked Loras (Iowa). Both teams won five bouts, with the Auggies recording one major decision and the Duhawks recording two. Trailing 16-7, Loras won the final three bouts of the match to claim the one-point win.
• Four Auggies went a perfect 4-0 on the day -- top-ranked 165-pounder Lucas Jeske (SO, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS), No. 5-ranked 133-pounder Sam Bennyhoff (JR, Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS), No. 5-ranked 157-pounder Ryan Epps (SO, Cannon Falls, Minn./Cannon Falls HS) and 174-pounder Tanner Vassar (SO, Maple Lake, Minn./Maple Lake HS).
• Jeske improved to 9-0 on the season, claiming two first-period pins and a 17-0, second-period technical fall on Saturday. Jeske now has four pins, a technical fall and two major decisions among his nine wins on the year.
• Bennyhoff also improved to 9-0 on the year, opening his day with a 3:45 pin of UW-Whitewater's No. 10-ranked Hazen Rice, following with a first-period pin against Cornell and later claiming an 11-3, major-decision win against Loras. Of his nine wins, Bennyhoff has four pins, a technical fall and three major decisions.
• Epps moved to 8-0 with his four wins, and Vassar improved to 8-1, scoring two pins and a major decision.
• Victor Gliva (SO, Farmington, Minn./Farmington HS), the No. 3-ranked wrestler at 125 pounds, and 149-pounder Alex Wilson (JR, Oak Grove, Minn./St. Francis HS) both went 3-1 on the day, with Gliva (6-2) collecting a pin and Wilson (7-2) claiming a pin, major decision and technical fall. Sebastian Larson (SR, River Falls, Wis./River Falls HS) went 2-2 on the day at 197, and Mike Hayes (JR, Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS, 141) and Jonny Zarnke (SO, Chaska, Minn./Chaska HS, 184) also had pins for the Auggies.
• Saturday's dual-meet event featured six of the top 21-ranked teams in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III national poll. No. 8-ranked Loras (Iowa) won all three of its matches on the day, while No. 2-ranked Augsburg went 3-1. Top-ranked Wartburg (Iowa) went 2-1, as did No. 12-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater and No. 17-ranked Wisconsin-La Crosse. No. 21-ranked Concordia-Moorhead went 0-3, as did Elmhurst (Ill.). Wisconsin-Stevens Point and Cornell (Iowa) each went 1-2.
