JORDAN, Minn. -- The Augsburg University men's golf team tied for a second-place finish at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships, with the final two rounds completed on Sunday at the Ridges at Sand Creek.
THE BASICS
RESULTS:Â Augsburg t-2nd/10 (886)
LOCATION: Ridges at Sand Creek (Par 72, 6,961 yards), Jordan, Minn.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The final two rounds of the 54-hole event were played on Sunday, due to the likelihood of rain all day on Monday. Augsburg started the day in third place, but used a 293 score in the second round on Sunday morning to move into second place, two strokes behind St. Thomas.
• A wild final round ensued on Sunday afternoon, with the lead changing hands several times between St. Thomas, Augsburg and Gustavus. Augsburg held a four-stroke lead at one point, but St. Thomas made a late charge and won the title with an 882 (291-298-293) total, four strokes ahead of the 886 of both Augsburg (298-293-295) and Gustavus (307-291-288).
•
Brett Buckingham (JR, Glenwood, Minn./Minnewaska Area HS), last year's MIAC individual co-medalist, earned MIAC All-Championship Team (top-10) honors for the second straight year and automatic All-MIAC honors for the third straight season, finishing in fourth place with a 54-hole total of 1-over-par 217 (70-72-73), seven strokes behind medalist Jacob Pedersen of Gustavus (210). Buckingham has recorded top-10 individual finishes in four of his five events during the fall half of the 2018-19 season.
•
Dakota Krech (SR, Blaine, Minn./Blaine HS) earned MIAC All-Championship Team and automatic All-MIAC honors for the first time with his best-ever finish at the conference meet, tying for sixth place with a 220 (78-73-69) total, his career-best 54-hole score. His final-round 69, a stroke off his career-best single-round score, was a stroke off the best single-round score of the tournament.

•
Harrison Cooper (JR, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley HS) finished in a tie for 15th place with a three-round total of 225 (71-75-79). The finish was his third straight top-25 finish at the conference meet, after earning All-MIACÂ honors with a sixth-place finish last year and a 22nd-place finish in 2016.
• Competing in their first MIAC Championships,
Gunnar Goodmanson (SO, Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) finished in a tie for 22nd place with a 228 (79-73-76) total, andÂ
David Walker (JR, Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) finished in a tie for 37th place with a career-best 54-hole score of 237 (82-80-75), with his final-round 75 tying a season-best score.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Augsburg's 886 total marked a school record for a 54-hole total in the "modern era" of the men's golf program (1994-95 to present), breaking the old mark of 891, set in the 2016 Saint John's Spring Invitational. The finish marked the first time Augsburg has finished a 54-hole meet with all three rounds scoring under 300.
• It is the third time in the last four years that Augsburg has recorded a top-three finish at the MIAC Championships. The Auggies won the MIAC title in 2015 and finished third last season.
UP NEXT
• Augsburg wraps up the fall half of the 2017-18 season, competing at the Berry College (Ga.) Chick-Fil-A Collegiate Classic on Oct. 22-23 at the Stonebridge Golf Club in Rome, Ga.
