Alex Wilson wins title at St. Cloud State

ST. CLOUD, Minn. -- Top-ranked 149-pounder Alex Wilson (SR, Oak Grove, Minn./St. Francis HS) won all four matches, including three by bonus-point decisions, to win his weight class title and lead the Augsburg University wrestling team at the St. Cloud State University Holiday Inn/Husky Open on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Wilson, the No. 1-ranked wrestler at 149 in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III national poll, improved to 13-0 on the season, outscoring his opponents by a 61-16 margin in his four wins to claim the open title. He had technical fall wins in his first two bouts, then scored a 15-5, major-decision win over Mason Phillips of St. Cloud State in the finals. Of Wilson's 13 wins, he has three pins, six technical falls and two major decisions. 
• Tanner Vassar (JR, Maple Lake, Minn./Maple Lake HS) finished second at 184 pounds, claiming pins in his first two victories before being edged 13-10 by Tyree Overton of St. Cloud State, ranked No. 10 in the Division II national rankings. Quinn Youngs (FY, Monticello, Minn./Maple Lake HS) also placed second for the Auggies at 133, in a round-robin format.
• AJ Bethea (FY, Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) placed third for the Auggies at 149, as did Nick Rogge (FY, Eastman, Wis./Prairie du Chien HS) at 174 and Ethan Hofacker (JR, Spring Valley, Wis./Spring Valley HS) at heavyweight. 
• Ryan Epps (JR, Cannon Falls, Minn./Cannon Falls HS), ranked No. 1 nationally at 165, suffered his first loss of the season, as he was edged 4-2 by Devin Fitzpatrick of St. Cloud State, the No. 8-ranked wrestler in Division II. Epps finished fourth at 165, as did Gage Zieske (FY, Alexandria, Minn./Osakis HS) at 141.
