MINNEAPOLIS --
Booker Coplin (JR, Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS) posted his 12th career double-double to lead the Augsburg University men's basketball team to a 71-69 victory over Macalester College in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Monday night at Si Melby Hall.
THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 71, Macalester 69
LOCATION: Si Melby Hall, Minneapolis, Minn.
RECORDS: Augsburg 13-4 overall (9-3 MIAC), Macalester 4-13 overall (1-11 MIAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg led by 13 points with 4:22 to play in the game, but Macalester's Jackson Henningfield scored 14 straight points for the Scots to cut the Augsburg lead to 69-68 with just 1:20 remaining. The Auggies'
Martin Mitchell (JR, Apple Valley, Minn./Apple Valley HS) converted a layup in transition to extend the Augsburg lead to 71-68. Augsburg fouled and sent the Scots to the free-throw line with two seconds left to play. The Scots converted the first and Augsburg was able to grab the rebound on the intentionally missed second free throw to seal the win.
• Coming off a career-high 38 points in the Auggies' win over St. Olaf on Saturday, Coplin pulled down a career-high 17 rebounds, to go along with 22 points, six steals and five assists. The double-double was the seventh of the year for Coplin and 12th overall in his Auggie career.
•
Kevin McKiernan (SR, Savage, Minn./Prior Lake HS) scored 17 points for Augsburg and added a pair of assists and rebounds.
• Also scoring in double figures for Augsburg was Mitchell, who finished with 12 points.
Henry Mulligan (JR, Iowa City, Iowa/Iowa City HS) added nine points and
Matt Carik (SO, Rogers, Minn./Rogers HS) dished out a team-best six assists.
• Continuing to be a strong rebounding presence of late, post player
Carter Duncan (JR, Chisago City, Minn./Chisago Lakes HS), pulled down eight rebounds to go along with four points and a pair of blocked shots.
• The Auggies had a tough shooting night, only connecting on 36.8 percent (25-of-68) of their shot attempts, while Macalester hit 42.9 percent (27-of-63) from the floor. The Scots posted a 45-39 advantage on the boards, however Augsburg claimed a 18-5 advantage in second chance points.
