BUDAPEST, HUNGARY -- Augsburg University women's wrestler
Emily Shilson (FY, Maple Grove, Minn./Mounds View HS) went 1-2 in competition for Team USA at the United World Wrestling Under-23 World Championships on Wednesday and Thursday.
Shilson received a tough draw in her opening match in the round of 32 on Wednesday, having to face 2017 UWW Junior World champion and 2012 and 2014 Cadet World champion Kita Kagata of Japan.
According to a match report from Kyle Klingman of Trackwrestling, Shilson surrendered a takedown, then scored a point on a step out and took a 3-2 lead on a takedown. But Kagata then used two takedowns and a turn to claim an 8-3 victory over Shilson.Â
With Kagata reaching the finals after winning her semifinal match, Shilson was pulled into the repechage round on Thursday. In her first repechage match, Shilson scored a 12-10 victory over Turkan Nasirova of Azerbaijan, the 2015 UWW Junior World champion and 2018 U23 World bronze medalist. But Shilson's competition ended with a 10-0 loss to 2018 U23 World silver medalist Nadezhda Sokolova of Russia.
According to a match report from Kyle Klingman of Trackwrestling, Shilson was taken down, then turned four times on gut wrenches to end the match early.

The 2018 UWW Cadet World titlist and 2018 Youth Olympic Games champion at 43 kilograms (95 pounds), Shilson won the title at the 2019 UWW U23 Women's National Championships at 50 kilograms (110 pounds) to qualify to represent the United States at the U23 World Championships in Hungary.
A six-time Minnesota girls' state champion and three-time Minnesota high school state tournament qualifier in boys' wrestling, Shilson is the headliner of an
impressive debut class for Augsburg's inaugural women's wrestling team, which will begin competition on Nov. 9 at the Waldorf (Iowa) Open.
Ranked as the
No. 1 women's wrestling recruit in the country in the Class of 2019 by The Open Mat website, Shilson earned six junior and cadet national titles at the USA Wrestling/U.S. Marine Corps National Championships in Fargo, N.D., during her career, just the second woman ever to accomplish the feat.
One of the most accomplished young female wrestlers in American history, Shilson became the first American wrestler ever to earn a gold medal at the Youth Olympic Games (ages 15-17), when she won the 43-kilogram title in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 2018. She also claimed the UWW Cadet World Championships title at 43 kilograms, after finishing second in the event in 2017. She also earned UWW Pan-American Cadet championships in 2018 (43 kg) and 2016 (46 kg), earning the Golden Boot award as the tournament's outstanding wrestler in 2018. Competing at the 2019 UWW Pan-American Junior Championships in June in Guatemala, she finished second at 50 kilograms.
