6 Auggie men's hockey players honored by MIAC

2019-20 MIAC MEN'S HOCKEY AWARDS

MINNEAPOLIS -- Six Augsburg University men's hockey players earned postseason honors from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for the 2019-20 men's hockey season, it was announced on Tuesday.

Defender John O'Connor (SR, Moorhead, Minn./Moorhead HS) earned All-MIAC honors for the second year in a row, after receiving All-MIAC Honorable Mention honors his sophomore season. Forward Austin Martinsen (JR, Farmington, Minn./Farmington HS) earned All-MIAC honors, while forward Gavin Holland (SO, Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS), defender Patrick O'Connor (SO, Moorhead, Minn.) and goalie Daniil Gerasimov (JR, Moscow, Russia/State School 1944) earned All-MIAC Honorable Mention honors. Forward Ben Henderson (SR, North Branch, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) was named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team. The MIAC honors were the first in the careers of Martinsen, Holland, Patrick O'Connor, Gerasimov and Henderson.

John OConnorJohn O'Connor had another strong year on the blue line, finishing with three goals and seven assists for 10 points. He finished tied for 13th among MIAC defenders in total points, with his seven assists tied for 14th-most. He was a key member of a penalty-kill unit that was tops among all MIAC teams and fifth-best among all NCAA Division III teams nationally, killing on a 88.4 percent (84-of-95) rate. He had a goal or assist in nine of his 26 games this season. He finished his 99-game Augsburg career with eight goals and 30 assists for 38 points.

Austin MartinsenMartinsen had a breakout year in his junior campaign, leading a balanced Augsburg scoring attack with 19 points -- eight goals and 11 assists. He had a goal or assist in 14 of his 23 games played this season, with five multi-point games. In his 70-game Augsburg career, Martinsen now has 16 goals and 23 assists for 39 points.

Gavin HollandHolland also had the best year of his young career in 2019-20, leading the Auggies with 12 goals and adding three assists for 15 points, second-most on the team. He finished fourth among MIAC players in goals this season. In his 26 games, he had points in 12 games, with three multi-goal games. In 52 career games, he now has 16 goals and four assists for 20 points.

Patrick OConnorPatrick O'Connor joined his older brother John on the same defensive pairing most fo the season, finishing with two goals and nine assists for 11 points, tied for 10th-most among MIAC defenders in points and tied for eighth in assists. He had a goal or assist in 10 of his 26 games played. In his 54-game career, he now has three goals and 16 assists for 19 points.

Daniil GerasimovGerasimov led all MIAC goalies with a 2.02 goals against-average this season, with his .928 save percentage (517 saves) second-best. He finished 10-10-0 with five shutouts in 20 starts. Among NCAA Division III goalies nationally, he finished 17th in GAA and 20th in save percentage, with his five shutouts tied for third-most. In his 30-game career in goal, he has a 16-12-0 record with five shutouts, a 2.14 GAA and .924 save percentage.

Ben HendersonHenderson was named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team, as part of the conference's sportsmanship initiative. Members of the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team are selected by their coaches and teammates as individuals who demonstrate ideals of positive sportsmanship both on and off the field of competition. Henderson finished his second season as an Auggie with a goal and seven assists for eight points. In 40 career games, he finished with two goals and seven assists for nine points.

Under 14th year head coach Chris Brown, Augsburg finished 14-11-1 overall, 9-6-1 in MIAC play, qualifying for the MIAC postseason playoffs for the sixth straight year. Augsburg has finished with 12 or more wins each of the past seven seasons.
