Auggie women finish sixth nationally in academics, 5 individuals honored

MINNEAPOLIS -- With five wrestlers earning National Wrestling Coaches Association NCAA Scholar All-America recognition, the Augsburg University women's wrestling team recorded the sixth-highest team grade-point average among NCAA wrestling teams, it was announced recently. 

Augsburg recorded a 3.06 team grade-point average, good for sixth place in the NCAA national ranking. In Augsburg's first season, the team recorded top-ten finishes in academics (sixth), team duals (seventh), WCWA nationals (sixth) and national collegiate women's championships (ninth).

Individually, five Auggie wrestlers earned NWCA National Collegiate Athletic Association Scholar All-America honors -- Emily Shilson (FY, Maple Grove, Minn./Mounds View HS), Bel Snyder (SO, Deer Creek, Minn./Wadena-Deer Creek HS), Vayle-Rae Baker (FY, Benton, Pa./Wyoming Seminary), Savannah Vold (SO, Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) and Kahela Jolly (FY, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS).    

A finance major with a 4.00 GPA, Shilson finished her debut season as the national champion at both the WCWA and national collegiate championships. She finished with a perfect 14-0 record, six pins and six technical falls.

An education major with a 3.9755 GPA, Snyder competed at the both the WCWA and National Collegiate championships. She finished the season with a record of 8-13 overall with three technical falls and four pins.

Baker, a psychology major with a 3.8085 GPA, finished her first season as an Auggie with an 18-6 record, including seven tech falls and six pins. She went undefeated at the WCWA national duals, picking up four big wins for the Auggies and claimed a runner-up finish at the WCWA national championships.

An exercise science major with a 3.7925 GPA, Vold finished with a 5-7 overall record, including two important wins for the Auggies at the NWCA National Duals and a pair of wins at the WCWA national championships.

A psychology major with a 3.8762 GPA, Jolly went 2-7 in her opening campaign, including a criteria win in the Auggies UW-Steven's Point dual and an upset of the No. 6 ranked wrestler at the WCWA national championships.

According to the NWCA, "teams must be comprised of 10 student-athletes who competed in 50% of your scheduled competitions. Schools may add up to two other individuals who must have wrestled in at least one varsity match. For individuals, wrestlers must have attended their institution for one full semester and met one of three criteria. For 2020 NCWWC All-Americans, a 3.0 cumulative GPA, for NCWWC national participants, a 3.25 cumulative GPA or a 3.5 cumulative GPA for a wrestler who was not a participant at nationals but competed in at least 50% of the scheduled dates."
