Auggies top DePauw in final Florida game

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Augsburg University men's basketball team finished its trip to Florida on a strong note as it defeated DePauw University (Ind.) 82-68 on Monday evening as a part of the Daytona Beach Shootout to move to 9-2 this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• It was another back-and-forth opening for the Auggies, as each team took turns holding brief leads through the first 10 minutes of the game. The Auggies began to take control of the game in the latter minutes of the first half, using an 18-6 run to take a nine-point lead into halftime. Augsburg held the lead for the remainder of the game, pushing the advantage to as many as 21 points with under two minutes left.
• The Auggies played fast and capitalized in DePauw's turnovers all game, outscoring the Tigers 18-2 on fast-break opportunities and scoring 15 points off turnovers to DePauw's five.
Joe Palmer (JR, Faribault, Minn./Faribault HS) turned in another monster performance for the Auggies, scoring 29 points on 10 of 14 shooting (71.4%) and adding in eight rebounds, a block, and an assist.
• Jack Sorenson (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) also had a strong night, notching 12 points on five of 10 shooting with two assists, a rebound, a steal, and a block.
• Conner Knoepfle (SR, Andover, Minn./Andover HS) was the third and final Auggie to reach double figures with 10 points on four of nine from the floor, also adding six rebounds and an assist.
• Matt Carik (SR, Rogers, Minn./Rogers HS) registered nine points and three assists while Rayquan Moore (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle HS) added seven points along with a team-high four assists and three steals off the bench.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Following the game, Palmer remains atop the MIAC overall statistics rankings with 8.9 rebounds per-game and 23.6 points per-game.

FOR THE FOES
• The Tigers' scoring attack was anchored by Elijah Hales who finished with 18 points on four of eight shooting.

UP NEXT
• The Auggies will now take a break for the holidays before returning to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action with a game against Macalester at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 8 at Si Melby Hall.
