Auggies dominate against defending NJCAA champs

MINNEAPOLIS -- Winning 20 of 26 bouts, including 14 by bonus-point margins, the Augsburg University men's wrestling team dominated in a non-scored dual meet against Rochester Community and Technical College on Friday evening at Si Melby Hall.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg, winners of the most recent NCAA Division III national title in 2019, had 19 wrestlers compete in 26 bouts on Friday. Of the 19 wrestlers, 14 were first-years and sophomores. The Auggies claimed six pins, four technical falls, four major decisions and a forfeit among their 20 victories over the Yellowjackets, the 2020 National Junior College Athletic Association national champions.
• Charlie Pickell (FY, Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) scored two victories by technical fall, including a 16-1, 4:57 win over Parker Dobrocky, the top-ranked NJCAA wrestler nationally at 141 pounds. Pickell also had a 17-1, 5:53 technical fall in his second match, improving to 4-0 on the season.
• Tyler Kim (SO, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS), ranked No. 9 in the initial National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III national rankings at 285 pounds, claimed two victories, including a pin in 71 seconds. 
• Bentley Schwanebeck-Ostermann (SO, Loyal, Wis./Marshfield HS) improved to 7-0 on the season with two wins, including a 16-0, 6:34 technical fall in his second win at 197 pounds. He scored a 6-0 win over RCTC's Tristen Wilson, ranked No. 5 in the NJCAA national poll at 197.
• Carter Paulson (FY, Rice Lake, Wis./Rice Lake HS) improved to 3-1 on the year with a pair of wins, including a 12-4 major decision at 174 pounds.
• Also claiming pins for the Auggies were Adam Mickelson (SO, Lakeville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) at 133, Brady Gross (SO. Rosemount, Minn./Apple Valley HS) and Aedon Oberdorfer (FY, St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park HS) at 141, Charlie Stuhl (FY, Ellsworth, Wis./Ellsworth HS) at 149 and Tim Mandyck (SR, Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids HS) at 285. 
• Tyler Shilson (JR, Maple Grove, Minn./Centennial HS) scored a 17-2, 6:04 technical fall win at 157 pounds.
• Nick Rogge (JR, Eastman, Wis./Prairie du Chien HS) claimed a 9-0 major decision win over RCTC's Gavin Christoffersen, ranked No. 2 nationally in the NJCAA at 184 pounds. At 149, Tanner Kroells (SO, Delano, Minn./Delano HS) scored a 13-3 major decision win over RCTC's Brandon Kidd Jr., ranked No. 6 nationally in the NJCAA at 157. Shawn Barth (SR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) had an 8-0 major decision win at 157.

FOR THE FOES
• Seth Brossard, ranked No. 4 in the NJCAA at 165 pounds, had two of the six victories for Rochester, including a second-period pin.
• Dobrocky (133) and Christofferson (184) and Wyatt Simon (174) each went 1-1 for the Yellowjackets, while Carl Bartels (125) also had a victory.

UP NEXT
• Augsburg hosts a triangular meet with Concordia College-Moorhead and Cornell College (Iowa) on Sunday, Feb. 28 at Si Melby Hall. Concordia and Cornell will meet at 1 p.m., with Augsburg taking on Cornell at 2:30 p.m. There will also be individual matches on a second mat between all three schools.
