Auggies win 3 titles, take 3rd at North Central Open

TOURNAMENT RESULTS | AUGSBURG RESULTS

NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- Claiming three individual titlists and eight placewinners, the No. 5-ranked Augsburg University women's wrestling team finished in third place at the competitive North Central University Open, held on Sunday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Fourteen Auggies competed in the open tournament, with eight earning top-six individual finishes. The Auggies combined for a 44-22 match record on Sunday, with 16 pins and 10 technical falls.
• The North Central tournament featured seven of the top 20 teams in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association NCAA national poll. Host North Central (Ill.), the No. 2-ranked NCAA squad, won the meet with 156.5 points, while top-ranked NCAA team King (Pa.) finished in second with 146.0 points. Augsburg, ranked No. 5, finished in third with 120.0 points, ahead of Indiana Tech (96.0), the No. 10-ranked NAIA squad, and NCAA ranked squads McKendree (Ill., No. 3, 83.5), Lindenwood (Mo., No. 9, 73.0) and Wisconsin-Stevens Point (No. 19, 51.0). No. 15-ranked Northern Michigan finished in 10th place.
• Top-ranked 155-pounder Marlynne Deede (SR, Springville, Utah/Springville HS) continued her unbeaten run this season with her third tournament title of the season, going 4-0 on Sunday. All four of her matches ended in the first period, with two 10-0 technical falls and two pins. She claimed a 2:14 pin of Auggie teammate Brooklyn Hays (FY, Lindon, Utah/Pleasant Grove HS) in the title match to improve to 15-0 on the season with three pins and 10 technical falls. Hays went 3-1 with a technical fall and a 4-2 win over No. 4-ranked Tiffani Baublitz of North Central in the semifinals, improving to 17-5 on the year.
• Nina Makem (SO, Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS), who moved into the No. 1 spot in the national rankings at 136 pounds in the most recent NWCA poll, went 4-0 with a pin and two technical falls to win her weight class. In the finals, she scored her second straight win over No. 2-ranked Yele Aycock of North Central, a 4-3 decision. Makem is now 14-2 on the year with three pins and nine technical falls, and is 2-1 against Aycock this season.
• No. 3-ranked 170-pounder Ashley Lekas (SO, Plano, Texas/Plano West HS) claimed her third straight tournament victory with three first-period wins -- a 56-second pin, 10-0 technical fall and 49-second pin of Wisconsin-Stevens Point's Tabitha Breitrick in the finals. Lekas is now 15-2 on the season with four pins and eight technical falls.
• No. 3-ranked 143-pounder Katie Lange (SO, Sherburn, Minn./Martin County West HS) earned runner-up honors on Sunday, going 3-1 with two technical falls and a 1:22 pin of No. 4-ranked Kendall Bostelman of North Central in the semifinals, her third win over Bostelman this season. She lost a 10-0 technical fall to top-ranked Ana Luciano of King (Pa.) in the finals. Lange is now 16-4 this season, with seven pins and eight technical falls.
• Gabrielle Torgerson (SR, Spooner, Wis./Cumberland HS) finished in fifth place at 123 points, going 3-2 on the day with a pair of pins. Brinley Cowley (FY, Mendon, Utah/Mountain Crest HS) made her collegiate debut and finished in sixth place at 116 pounds, while Autumn Flanigan (JR, Troy, Mo./Troy Buchanan HS) finished sixth at 130 pounds.
