HOW IT HAPPENED
• Four of the seven Augsburg wrestlers opened their tournaments with victories, moving into Friday night's quarterfinal round, while three Auggies remain alive in wrestlebacks after opening losses.
• Heavyweight Tyler Kim (JR, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) improved to 36-6 on the season with a pair of second-period pins, his 17th and 18th of the season. The No. 6-seeded 285-pounder in the field, he opened with a 4:11 pigtail pin of Brayan Reyes of Millikin (Ill.), then claimed a 4:04 pin of Hank Behaegehel of Johns Hopkins (Md.). Last year's 285-pound runner-up at the 2021 National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III national meet, Kim will face No. 3-seed Liridon Leka of Johnson & Wales (R.I.) in Friday's quarterfinals.
• Competing in his third national tournament, Solomon Nielsen (SR, Luverne, Minn./Luverne HS) opened his day with a convincing 10-1, major decision win over Kade Kravits of King's (Pa.) at 174 pounds. Now 30-3 on the season and 117-22 in his career, Nielsen collected two first-period takedowns, a third-period reversal and a two-point near-fall to claim the win. Of his 30 wins, 20 are by bonus-point margins (eight major decisions, seven technical falls, five pins). Nielsen, who finished second at 174 pounds at last year's NWCA national meet, will face Stefan Major of the Stevens Institute of Technology (N.J.) in Friday's quarterfinals. In a dual earlier this season, Nielsen claimed a 24-9 (5:51) technical fall over Major.
• Tyler Shilson (JR, Maple Grove, Minn./Centennial HS) continued to rack up the points this season, scoring his 16th technical fall win of the year, a 20-5, 7:00 triumph over Eric Hutchinson of York (Pa.) in his 157-pound opener. Improving to 30-3 on the year, Shilson claimed seven takedowns, a four-point near-fall and 4:14 of riding time for the convincing win. He now has 26 bonus-point wins in his 30 victories this season. Shilson finished third at 157 at last year's NWCA nationals. Shilson, the No. 5 seed at 157, will face No. 4 seed Ryan Luth of Washington & Lee (Va.) in the quarterfinals.
• Bentley Schwanebeck-Ostermann (JR, Loyal, Wis./Marshfield HS) surrendered an early takedown, but then rallied with 15 of the next 16 points to score a 15-3 major decision over Quinn Haddad of The College of New Jersey in his 197-pound opener. Schwanebeck-Ostermann, a sixth-place finisher at last year's NWCA nationals, claimed two takedowns and two escapes to build a 6-3 lead after two periods, then claimed a pair of four-point near-falls in the final minute of the third period to improve to 18-5 on the season. An unseeded wrestler in the field, Schwanebeck-Ostermann will face No. 2-seed Jack Heldt of Wabash (Ind.) in the quarterfinals.
Derek Steele has a leg lace on an opponent during a 2021-22 Augsburg mens wrestling match.• At 125 pounds, Derek Steele (FY, Winthrop, Minn./Sibley East HS) dropped a 16-5 major decision in his pigtail opener to Riley Parker of Washington & Lee, but rallied back to stay alive in the tournament, claiming a 11-6 win over Isaac Wiegel of Wisconsin-Platteville. Steele, the No. 8 seed at 125, is now 24-7 on the year.
• Nick Rogge (SR, Eastman, Wis./Prairie du Chien HS) suffered a 12-2 major-decision loss to top-seed Shane Liegel of Loras (Iowa) in his opening match, and had to wrestle a pigtail consolation to remain alive. He responded in a big way, scoring a 16-0, 3:26 technical fall win over Brian Torres of Cortland State (N.Y.), scoring a takedown, then converting three 4-point near-falls in the final minute of the first period, and an escape in the second period to end the match early. Rogge is now 25-5 on the season and 90-21 in his career.
• Sam Stuhl (JR, Ellsworth, Wis./Ellsworth HS) took a 4-3 lead into the third period of his 141-pound opening match against Brandon Woody of Averett (Va.), but Woody claimed a takedown and two-point near-fall in the final seven seconds of the bout to top Stuhl 7-4. The No. 7 seed at 141, Stuhl is now 23-6 on the season, including a 19-4 record at Augsburg after transferring from Division I North Dakota State.
