Taylor highlights Auggie split with Edgewood

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg University softball team wrapped up the 2022 Auggie Dome Games on Saturday afternoon, earning a nonconference split with Edgewood (Wis.) at Edor Nelson Field.

THE BASICS

SCORES: Edgewood 9, Augsburg 1 (5 inn.); Augsburg 11, Edgewood 10 (9 inn.)
LOCATION: Edor Nelson Field, Minneapolis
RECORD: Augsburg 3-1 overall, Edgewood 4-4 overall

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS

• The Auggies struck first in game one, with Meredith Taylor (FY, Randolph, Minn./Randolph HS) batting in Sabriya Passmore (JR, Apple Valley, Minn./Apple Valley HS) on a single through the left side to give the Auggies a 1-0 lead.
• It was all Edgewood from that point, with the Eagles scoring nine straight runs to win the game in the fifth inning via the eight-run rule.
• After tossing a no-hitter in her previous outing, Brynn Hostettler (FY, Northfield, Minn./Northfield HS) struggled with her control, walking seven batters while striking out one and allowing five earned runs in 1.1 innings of work.
• Libby Moore (FY, Springville, Iowa/Springville HS) made her collegiate debut in the circle for the Auggies in relief of Hostettler, allowing three hits and one run with two walks and two strikeouts in 2.2 innings of work.
• Taylor and Sara Deming (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) each finished 2-for-3 at the plate in game one to lead the Auggie offense.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS

• Taylor got the Auggies rolling again in game two in the bottom of the first, driving in Deming on a triple to right field to give Augsburg a 1-0 lead.
• The Eagles got on the board with two runs in the top of the second, but Augsburg responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning with Passmore scoring on an Edgewood error and Torrie Rehder (FY, Goodhue, Minn./Goodhue HS) batting in Taylor on a double to right field.
• After Edgewood regained a 6-3 lead in the top of the fourth, Katie Manecke (SO, Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) drove in Kayla Hanson (SR, St. James, Minn./St. James HS) with a single and Manecke came around to score on a single from Deming before Taylor hit a two-run home run, the first of her career, to put the Auggies back on top 7-6.
• The Eagles tied it up at seven in the sixth inning and the game headed to extra innings after both teams failed to score in the seventh. Edgewood jumped back on top with two runs in the eighth, but the Auggies would not go away easily as Hanson drove in Grace Syson (SO, Oshkosh, Wis./Lourdes Academy HS) with a triple on the first pitch of the inning and Manecke singled to center field to bring Hanson home, tying the game up at nine.
• Trailing 10-9 after the Eagles added another run in the ninth, Rehder hit a double to right center to bring Bella Kallas (SR, Big Lake, Minn./Big Lake HS) home and tie the game up once again. Syson came through as the hero, hitting a single up the middle to score Rehder and walk it off for the Auggies.
• Olivia O'Connor (SO, White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) made her second start of the season for Augsburg, giving up seven hits and six earned runs with two walks and a strikeout in her 3.1 innings.
• Saryn Sherrell pitched in relief of O'Connor, tossing 5.2 innings and allowing six hits and two earned runs with three walks and a strikeout.
• Taylor led the Auggie offense through both games, going a combined 4-for-6 at the plate with a triple, a home run, and four RBIs.

FOR THE FOES
• Alyse Maurer went a combined 4-for-8 with three RBIs and Grace Ott batted in four runs to lead the Eagles.
