Martinsen named Player of Year, May Coach of Year

MINNEAPOLIS – Augsburg University forward Austin Martinsen (SR, Farmington, Minn./Farmington HS) was named the 2021-22 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Hockey Player of the Year and head coach Greg May was named the MIAC Men's Hockey Coach of the Year while 13 Auggies in total earned various MIAC men's hockey honors, it was announced on Tuesday.

Along with being named Player of the Year, Martinsen also earned All-MIAC honors for the second time in his career, having previously been named All-MIAC in 2020. Joining him on the 2021-22 All-MIAC team were forwards Fritz Belisle (JR, Red Wing, Minn./Roseville Area HS), Jarod Blackowiak (SR, Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie HS), Austin Dollimer (SR, Rosemount, Minn./Rosemount HS), and Gavin Holland (SR, Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS), defensemen Patrick O'Connor (SR, Moorhead, Minn./Moorhead HS) and Mason Palmer (JR, Plymouth, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary's HS), and goaltender Jack Robbel (JR, Bloomington, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary's HS). It was the first MIAC postseason honors for Belisle, Blackowiak, Dollimer, Palmer, and Robbel and the second career honors for Holland (2020 Honorable Mention) and O'Connor (2020 Honorable Mention).

In addition, goaltender Samuel Vyletelka (FY, Zilina, Slovakia/Grammar School of St. Francis of Assisi) was named to the MIAC All-Rookie Team and Auggie defensemen Logan Kons (SO, Niles, Ill./West HS) and Nick Woodward (SR, Dubuque, Iowa/Dubuque HS) were each named All-MIAC Honorable Mentions. Andrew Hicks (SO, Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka HS) was tabed as Augsburg's representative on the MIAC All-Sportsmanship Team.

Greg MayMay was named the top coach in the conference by his peers in his first season at the helm, after leading the Auggies to their 11th regular-season MIAC title in program history with a total of 24 regular-season wins (second-most in school history) and a mark of 14-2-0 in conference play. May is now the fourth different Auggie head coach to be named MIAC Coach of the Year, joining Ed Saugestad (1978), Mike Schwartz (1998), and Chris Brown (2007, 2016, 2019).

A four-year player for the Auggie men's hockey team (2003-07), May returned to Augsburg in September 2021 after a successful career as a coach and administrator at both the high school and collegiate levels.

Austin MartinsenMartinsen becomes the ninth Auggie to be named MIAC Men's Hockey Player of the Year, joining Nick Schmit (2018-19), Aaron Johnson (2006-07), Jaro Cesky (2002-03), C.J. Beaurline (1993-94), Dallas Miller (1987-88), Steve Nayman (1982-83), Dick Bain (1978-79), and Gary Hughes (1977-78).

In his senior season, Martinsen had a dominant 2021-22 campaign for the Auggies, playing in all 28 games and leading the MIAC with 36 points and ranking fourth in both goals (15) and assists (21). His plus-13 plus-minus rating was also tied for 11th in the conference. His six game-winning goals were the most in the MIAC this season while his five power-play goals ranked second in the conference. In conference contests, Martinsen led all MIAC skaters with 11 goals and 23 points and ranked second with 12 assists. In 103 career games, Martinsen has totaled 52 assists and 35 goals for 87 points and holds a career plus-minus of plus-33.

Fritz BelisleAppearing in 27 games, Belisle earns his first All-MIAC selection after a junior season in which he led the Auggies and ranked second in the conference with 16 goals and sixth with 25 points. He tied for the top spot in the conference with six power-play goals and his plus-14 plus-minus rating was ninth-best in the conference and fifth-best on the team. He was also one of only to Auggies to notch a hat trick this season. In 56 career games, Beliisle has scored 19 goals and added 12 assists for 31 points total.

Jarod BlackowiakAlso getting the first All-MIAC nod of his career as a senior, Blackowiak played in all 28 games and finished the season ranked second on the team and in the conference as a whole with a plus-minus rating of plus-18. He scored 12 goals (7th MIAC) and tallied 12 assists (16th MIAC) for a total of 24 points (7th MIAC). Playing in 57 games throughout his career, Blackowiak has totaled 17 goals and 18 assists for 35 points.

Austin DollimerThe third Auggie forward to be named All-MIAC for the first time this season, Dollimer played in all 28 games for Augsburg this season and finished with 21 assists (2nd MIAC), eight goals (18th MIAC), and 29 points (3rd MIAC). His plus-minus rating of plus-15 and two game-winning goals were each good for eighth in the conference. Dollimer has appeared in 82 games for Augsburg in his career, tallying 47 assists and 17 goals for 64 points total.

Gavin HollandAfter being named an All-MIAC Honorable Mention in 2020, Holland earns his first spot on the All-MIAC Team after playing in all 28 games for Augsburg and finishing with 13 goals (5th MIAC), 27 points (5th MIAC), and 14 assists (8th MIAC). His four power-play goals in conference play were the most in the MIAC. In his collegiate career, Holland has played in 85 games and scored 34 goals with 21 assists for 55 points.

Mason PalmerEarning his first-career All-MIAC nod in his first year with the Auggies, Palmer finished the season with a MIAC-leading plus-21 plus-minus rating and topped all conference defensemen with 21 points, all of which came via assists.

Patrick O'ConnorFollowing a 2020 campaign in which he was named an All-MIAC Honorable Mention, O'Connor earns his first All-MIAC Team honors following a season in which he ranked fifth among all MIAC defensemen with 10 assists. He also scored one goal on the season to give him 11 total points, seventh among defensemen in the conference. In his four seasons with Augsburg, O'Connor has racked up 27 assists and four goals for 31 points in 82 games. His career plus-minus sits at plus-19.

Jack RobbelJoining Mac Berglove as the only goaltenders to earn a spot on the All-MIAC team, Robbel finished the season as one of the top netminders in the conference. His 14 wins this season and win percentage of .875 both ranked first in the conference while his 30 goals allowed and goals-against average of 1.86 both ranked second. Additionally, he ranked eighth with 352 saves and fifth with a save percentage of .921. Appearing in a total of 24 games, Robbel boasts a career record of 19-2 with a save percentage of .927 and a goals-against average of 1.69.

Samuel VyletelkaComing in as a first-year goaltender out of Slovakia, Vyletelka earned a spot on the MIAC All-Rookie Team and helped Augsburg cement the best goalie tandem in the conference this season. His save percentage of .941 and goals-against average of 1.42 each ranked first in the MIAC while his .833 win percentage ranked second, coming in only behind Robbel.

Logan KonsPlaying in all 28 games during his sophomore season, Kons earned his first All-MIAC Honorable Mention nod after a season in which he tallied eight assists and four goals for a total of 12 points. His plus-minus rating of plus-11 ranked 16th in the conference and his two game-winning goals ranked eighth. Kons has made 33 appearances for Augsburg in his career, scoring six goals with 10 assists for a total of 16 points.

Nick WoodwardWoodward also earned his first appearance as an All-MIAC Honorable Mention after a senior season that saw him score five goals and tally five assists for a total of 10 points. He ranked fifth in the MIAC and second among defensemen with a plus-minus rating of plus-16. Woodward has played in 72 career games for the Auggies, tallying 13 assists with five goals for 18 points total. His career plus-minus currently sits at plus-27.

Andrew HicksHicks was named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team as part of the conference's sportsmanship initiative. Members of the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team are selected by their coaches and teammates as individuals who demonstrate ideals of positive sportsmanship both on and off the field of competition. He played all 28 games this season, tallying one goal and five assists for six points.  
 
After falling to St. Olaf in the MIAC Championship, Augsburg was granted an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament and will host either St. Norbert or St. Olaf on Saturday, March 19 at Ed Saugestad Rink.
