Augsburg assistant coach Wieser wins Senior Nationals title

Precious WieserFORT WORTH, Texas -- Augsburg University women's wrestler Precious (Bell) Wieser claimed her third USA Wrestling Senior Nationals championship, winning the women's freestyle title at 76 kilograms (167.5 pounds) on Sunday.

Wieser went 4-0 with a technical fall and two pins to win the 2023 title, beating two wrestlers with Augsburg ties along the way. In the semifinals, she topped Auggie 2023 All-American Brooklyn Hays 9-3, and in the finals, she pinned four-time Auggie All-American and 2023 national champion Marlynne Deede, in 3:36. Deede is wrestling her final collegiate season at the University of Iowa. Hays ended up finishing fourth at 76 kg.

Wieser joined the Augsburg women's wrestling team as an assistant coach in the 2022-23 school year. A native of Lancaster, Calif., she competed collegiately at Menlo College (Calif.) earning All-American honors four times, finishing second at 170 pounds at the 2019 NAIA national tournament, while finishing fourth at the 2019 WCWA national tournament and fifth at the 2018 WCWA nationals. She also earned NCWA All-American first-team honors in the COVID-shortened 2019-20 season, earning Outstanding Wrestler honors at the 2020 Cascade College Conference Championships. She was a member of Menlo teams that won both the NAIA and WCWA national titles in 2019.

Wieser has also shined on the national and international stages, Bell has been a member of the USA Wrestling Senior National Team. She won the U.S. Open title in 2019 and 2020, and won the 2019 U23 World Team Trials and World Team Trials Challenge tournament titles.

Wieser, Deede and Hays were three of several wrestlers with Augsburg ties competing at the Senior Nationals. Current Auggie Nina Makem went 3-2 at 68 kg (150 pounds) with a pin and two technical falls. Four-time Augsburg All-American Gabrielle Torgerson '23 went 1-2 at 57 kg (125.7 pounds). Vayle-Rae Baker, who earned two All-American honors at Augsburg before finishing her collegiate career at King (Pa.), won the 53 kg (116.8 pounds) title and earned tournament Outstanding Wrestler honors in women's freestyle. Emily Shilson, who was a four-time All-American and four-time national champion at Augsburg before finishing her college career at McKendree (Ill.), went 2-2 at 50 kg (110.2 pounds).

In men's Greco-Roman competition, Augsburg three-time All-American and two-time national champion Ryan Epps '19 went 1-1 at 87 kg (191.8 pounds), suffering an injury default in his second match. Three-time All-American and 2015 national champion Donny Longendyke '17 finished fourth at 130 kg (286.6 pounds), going 3-2 with a pin and a technical fall.
