MINNEAPOLIS – The Augsburg University baseball team opened up it's 2023 season on Monday with a doubleheader against the University of Wisconsin-Superior, dropping game one 14-2 while the second game was suspended in the bottom of the seventh inning due to time constraints at US Bank Stadium with Augsburg leading 11-9.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS (UW-SUPERIOR 14, AUGSBURG 2)
• The Yellowjackets jumped all over the Auggies early in game one, scoring six runs in the first inning and adding three more in the second to take a commanding 9-0 lead.
• After UW-Superior added two more runs in the top of the fourth,
Michael Weiss (SR, Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar HS) gave the Auggies their first hit of the season in the bottom half of the inning. The Yellowjackets would add three more runs before
Brandon Lockhart (SO, Oakdale, Minn./Tartan HS) batted in the Auggies' first run with a sacrifice fly that scored
Ty Gage (JR, Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS).
• In the bottom of the seventh,
Steven Salz (SR, Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) added another run for Augbsurg with his eight-career home run, a solo shot to left field.

Myer Schmitz (SO, Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) got the start on the mound for the Auggies, giving up eight hits and four earned runs in his one inning of work.
Luke Johnson (SR, Northfield, Minn./Northfield HS) pitched the next 3.0 innings, surrendering five hits and two earned runs while striking out three batters.
Alex Hinz (SR, Maplewood, Minn./Mounds Park Academy) got an inning of work with three hits and one earned run allowed while
Ben Kittleson (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) impressed in his second career appearance, pitching two scoreless and hitless innings with three strikeouts.
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS (AUGSBURG 11, UW-SUPERIOR 9, SUSPENDED IN SEVENTH INNING)
• It was the Auggies jumping out to an early lead in game two with
Jake Skogrand (SO, Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS) and Weiss both delivering 2-RBI doubles to put Augsburg ahead 4-0 in the top of the second inning.
• The Yellowjackets would tie the game with four runs in the bottom of the fourth, but the tie was short lived with Augsburg using a seven-run fifth inning to take an 11-4 lead. Gage and
Connor Stoik (SR, Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire Memorial HS) each batted in two runs in the inning while Skogrand,
Carter Peterson (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS), and
Clint Mattson (SR, North Branch, Minn./North Branch HS) had one each.
• The Yellowjackets would add a run in the bottom of the fifth and four more in the bottom of the seventh to make it a two-run game at 11-9, but the game was suspended with two outs in the bottom of the seventh due to time constraints at US Bank Stadium. The two teams will work to find a date to complete the suspended game in the coming weeks.

Austin Lang (FY, Anoka, Minn./Anoka HS) made his first career start on the mound, striking out one while allowing five hits and four earned runs.
Matty Rones (SR, Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman HS) pitched 0.2 innings of relief, walking one batter and allowing one earned run.
Sean Littmann (SO, Bloomington, Minn./Bloomington HS) got in two scoreless innings of work with two strikeouts while
Dylan Adams (SO, Windermere, Fla./Windermere Preparatory School) pitched .2 innings in the bottom of the seventh before the game was suspended.
FOR THE FOES
• Jordan Trimble finished the day 4-7 with four runs batted in and four runs scored for the Yellowjackets.
• Ryan Rodriguez pitched the first six innings of game one for UW-Superior, striking out seven while allowing just two hits and one run.

• The Auggies will return to US Bank Stadium tomorrow for a late-night doubleheader against Minnesota Morris with first pitch of game one set for 9:30 pm.
