Gage, Johnson, Tomony named Academic All-District

MINNEAPOLIS -- Three Augsburg University baseball players -- designated hitter Ty Gage (JR, Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS), pitcher Luke Johnson (SR, Northfield, Minn./Northfield HS) and second baseman Carson Tomony (SR, Madison, Wis./Madison East HS) -- were recently named to the Academic All-District Baseball Team, as selected by College Sports Communicators (formerly CoSIDA).
 
Gage is a secondary social studies education major with a 3.80 grade-point average, Johnson is a communication studies major with a 3.74 GPA and Tomony is a history and secondary education major with a 3.95 GPA.

Ty GageGage finished tied for the team's lead in hitting among regulars, batting .337 (29-of-86) with 15 runs scored, five doubles, a triple, a home run, 15 RBI, 12 walks, a .453 slugging percentage and a .447 on-base percentage. A catcher the prior two seasons, he assumed full-time designated hitter responsibilities this season and had at least one hit in 18 of his 28 games played, with nine multiple-hit games and three multiple-RBI games.

An Academic All-MIAC honor last season, Gage has appeared in 75 career games (64 starts) as an Auggie, hitting .274 (54-of-197) with 33 runs scored, 12 doubles, a triple, a home run, 30 walks, a .360 slugging percentage and a .386 on-base percentage.

Luke JohnsonJohnson appeared in six games (two starts) as a pitcher this season. In 18.0 innings, he had a 0-1 record with a 12.00 earned-run average, 16 strikeouts against 12 walks, and a .395 opponent batting average. Johnson had three or more strikeouts in four of his six appearances, including four-strikeout efforts against Macalester on May 2 and against St. Olaf on April 19.

A two-time Academic All-MIAC honoree, Johnson has appeared in 24 games (15 starts) in his college career, with a 3-8 record, 8.23 ERA, 61 strikeouts against 49 walks, and a .311 opponent batting average.

Carson TomonyA three-year starter in the infield, Tomony hit .309 (30-of-97) in 2023, with 16 runs scored, two doubles, a home run, 13 RBI, nine walks, a .361 slugging percentage and .387 on-base percentage. He had three stolen bases and a .978 fielding percentage, with two errors in 92 defensive chances.

An All-MIAC Defensive Team honoree in 2022 and a two-time Academic All-MIAC honoree, Tomony played in 103 games (100 starts) in his career, hitting .263 (84-of-319) with 49 runs scored, 10 doubles, two home runs, 35 RBI, 32 walks, a .313 slugging percentage and .341 on-base percentage. He had eight stolen bases in nine attempts, and a .955 career fielding percentage.

Under 20th-year head coach Keith Bateman, Augsburg went 9-24 overall (6-14 MIAC) in 2023.
 
The CSC Academic All-District team is part of the CSC Academic All-America program. Top student-athletes are nominated for inclusion on the Academic All-District teams by college and university sports information directors. Student-athletes must have a grade-point average above 3.50 (4.0 scale) and have outstanding athletic credentials. The Division III Academic All-America program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division III national governance structure, to assist CSC with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the Division III Academic All-America teams program.
