Augsburg baseball secures ABCA academic honor

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg University baseball team was recognized by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) with the Team Academic Excellence Award, it was announced this week. Augsburg finished the 2022-23 school year with a team cumulative grade-point average of 3.22.

In order to earn the honor, teams must post a team GPA of 3.0 or above for the entire 2022-23 academic year. Augsburg was one of more than 450 collegiate programs recognized (NCAA D-I, D-II, D-III, NAIA and junior college).

Of the team's 47 players in 2023, 30 Auggies had cumulative GPAs of 3.20 or higher and 18 had GPAs of 3.50 or higher.

13 Auggies earned Academic All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors in 2022 -- Owen Bernards (JR, St. Paul, Minn./Central HS), Cam Fischer (JR, Becker, Minn./Becker HS), Isaac Flynn (SR, Hastings, Minn./Hastings HS), Ty Gage (JR, Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS), Jimmy Hemera (SO, Christchurch, New Zealand/Hillmorton HS), Nick Hubbard (SO, Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS), Luke Johnson (SR, Northfield, Minn./Northfield HS), Ben Kittleson (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS), Matt Krenz (SR, Becker, Minn./Becker HS), Sean Littmann (SO, Bloomington, Minn./Bloomington HS), Carter Peterson (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS), Carson Tomony (SR, Madison, Wis./Madison East HS), and Josh Udelhofen (SO, Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig HS). 

Under 20th-year head coach Keith Bateman, the Auggies finished 9-24 overall and 6-14 in MIAC play.
