Augsburg captures title at competitive NCC Invite

NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- Winning three individual titles and placing 21 wrestlers among the top eight in their weight classes, the Augsburg University men's wrestling team captured the championship at the North Central College Invitational, held on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Auggies, ranked No. 6 in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III national rankings, scored 165.5 points to top host North Central (Ill.), the No. 9-ranked team nationally, with 142.5 points. No. 7-ranked Vermont State-Castleton finished third with 135.5 points, followed by Coe (Iowa) with 131.5 points. A total of six teams in the NWCA's top-25 rankings finished in the top eight spots in the team standings.
• Thirty-three Auggies competed at the tournament, with 21 recording top-eight finishes. Auggies combined for a 112-55 record in the tournament, with 28 pins, 15 technical falls and 18 major decisions.
Parker Venz (SR, Farmington, Minn./Farmington HS), the No. 3-ranked 197-pounder nationally, improved to 11-0 on the season with his weight-class title, going 4-0 with a 20-3, first-period technical fall and a 2:29 pin in the semifinals. He edged teammate Ethan Winkelman (FY, Hudson, Wis./Hudson HS) 1-0 in the finals. Venz now has four pins, two technical falls and one major decision on the season. Winkelman, who had a technical fall and three pins on the day, is now 13-1 with eight pins, two technical falls and two major decisions.
• Matthew Randolph (FY, Jordan, Minn./Jordan HS (Scott West)) claimed his second tournament title of the season, winning the 149-pound crown with a 5-0 effort, including a technical fall, pin and major decision. Randolph, ranked No. 11 nationally at 149, is now 16-1 on the season with three pins, four technical falls and three major decisions. Randolph topped teammate Lucas Jagodzinske (JR, Sherburn, Minn./Martin County West HS) 5-2 in the finals. Jagodzinske went 4-1 with a pin, major decision and technical fall to improve to 13-3 on the year.
Cooper Willis (JR, Kansasville, Wis./Union Grove HS), ranked No. 3 nationally at 165, improved to 14-0 on the season with his weight class title, going 5-0 on the day with a pin, technical fall and two major decisions. He edged No. 6-ranked Andrew Supers of Baldwin-Wallace (Ohio) 5-3 in the finals, his fourth win over a ranked wrestler this season. Of Willis' 14 victories, he has three pins, four technical falls and four major decisions.
• Karsen Otis (SO, Combined Locks, Wis./Kimberly HS) finished second at 157 pounds, going 3-1 with a pin and technical fall, while teammate Charlie Stuhl (SR, Ellsworth, Wis./Ellsworth HS) finished third with a 4-1 day, with a pin and technical fall to his credit.
Seth Goetzinger (SR, Chatfield, Minn./Chatfield HS), ranked No. 5 nationally at 174 pounds, went 3-1 with a pin and technical fall to finish second in his weight class, with teammate Nick Alexander (SO, Kaukauna, Wis./Wrightstown HS) going 4-2 with a pin and two major decisions to finish fourth.
Brandt Bombard (JR, North Branch, Minn./North Branch HS) finished third at 184 pounds, going 4-1, while Carter Sorenson (SR, Lengby, Minn./Fosston HS) shared fifth place with Max Sokolski (SR, Bonduel, Wis./Bonduel HS).
• Also placing fourth for the Auggies were Keno Vanier (JR, Edina, Minn./Richfield HS) at 125, Austin Gabbert (SR, Lester Prairie, Minn./Watertown-Mayer HS) at 141, Jacob Schimek (FY, Eagle Lake, Minn./St. Clair HS) at 197 and Tyler Raway (JR, Wyoming, Minn./Forest Lake HS) at 285.
• Wyatt Kaczrowski (SR, Seymour, Wis./Seymour HS) finished fifth at 125, as did Chance Suddeth (SO, Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton HS) at 133.
Cade Willis (JR, Kansasville, Wis./Union Grove HS) placed sixth at 141, Ethan Ballweber (SO, Princeton, Minn./Princeton HS) placed seventh at 157, and Karson Casper (JR, Coleman, Wis./Coleman HS) placed eighth at 149.

• Augsburg is now idle for the holiday break, and returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 4 at the University of Chicago (Ill.) UAA Challenge Duals.
