Simonson named MIAC Athlete of Week for 2nd time

Kayla SimonsonMINNEAPOLIS -- For the second time this season, Augsburg University goalie Kayla Simonson (FY, Delano, Minn./Delano HS) was named Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Hockey Athletes of the Week on defense, it was announced on Monday.

Simonson had 70 saves on 73 shots (.959) over the weekend, as Augsburg split a conference series with Gustavus Adolphus College in a meeting of schools ranked in the top 10 in both major NCAA Division III national polls. She had 31 saves in the Auggies' 2-0 home loss to the Gusties on Friday, then had a season-high 39 saves in the Auggies' 4-1 road win on Saturday. The three goals were the first she allowed on the season.

In five starts, she now has a 0.60 goals against-average and a .976 save percentage (124 saves), with three shutouts. Simonson leads the MIAC in GAA and save percentage, standing sixth among all NCAA Division III goalies in both categories.

Augsburg, now ranked No. 6 in both the latest USCHO Division III and D-III Hockey News Division III national polls, is back in action this weekend with a pair of nonconference games. The Auggies host Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Friday (12/13) at 7 p.m. at Ed Saugestad Rink, then travel to face No. 11/10 Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Saturday (12/14) at 2 p.m.
