Auggies top Eagles for 2nd time this season

MINNEAPOLIS -- Winning six of 10 bouts, the Augsburg University men's wrestling team claimed a dual-meet victory over the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse for the second time in a two-week span, a 19-13 decision on Saturday afternoon at Si Melby Hall.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Two weeks after topping UW-La Crosse 25-9 in the National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III National Duals semifinals on Jan. 11, Augsburg, ranked No. 4 in the latest NWCA Division III tournament national poll and No. 1 in the dual-meet poll, used five decision wins and a major decision to outlast UW-La Crosse, ranked No. 2 in the NWCA tournament rankings and No. 3 in the dual-meet rankings.
• No. 11-ranked 149-pounder Matthew Randolph (FY, Jordan, Minn./Jordan HS (Scott West)) controlled his bout against Josh Cherba from start to finish, using takedowns in the second and third periods to claim a 9-0, major decision win over Josh Cherba, improving to 22-1 in his collegiate debut season.
• Augsburg's No. 12-ranked 125-pounder Wyatt Kaczrowski (SR, Seymour, Wis./Seymour HS) rebounded from an earlier 9-8 loss to No. 10-ranked Quintin Wolbert, building an 8-1 advantage after two periods and scoring a 9-4 victory, improving to 15-5 on the year.
• Cooper Willis (JR, Kansasville, Wis./Union Grove HS), ranked No. 2 nationally at 165 pounds, scored his second victory of the season over UW-La Crosse's No. 3-ranked Tate Flege, an 8-5, back-and-forth triumph. Trailing 3-0 after one period, Willis cut the lead to 3-2 with a reversal in the second period, then took a 5-3 advantage with a takedown in the third period. Flege tied the bout with a reversal, but Willis countered with a reversal of his own, and added a riding time point to improve to 22-0 on the season.
• No. 6-ranked 174-pounder Seth Goetzinger (SR, Chatfield, Minn./Chatfield HS) improved to 15-3 on the season with a 5-1 win over No. 9-ranked Eddie Simes, and No. 4-ranked 184-pounder Brandt Bombard (JR, North Branch, Minn./North Branch HS) clinched the match victory for the Auggies with a 6-2 triumph over Leo Draveling.
• Chance Suddeth (SO, Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton HS) improved to 20-6 on the season with a strong performance at 133 pounds, claiming a 10-6 victory over Wyatt Magolski.

FOR THE FOES
• No. 3-ranked Ben Kawczynski avenged an earlier loss this season to Augsburg's No. 2-ranked Parker Venz (SR, Farmington, Minn./Farmington HS) at 197 pounds, dominating in a 16-2 major decision win.
• Top-ranked 285-pounder Michael Douglas claimed the lone takedown of his bout with Augsburg's Tyler Raway 20 seconds into sudden-victory overtime in a 4-1 victory.
• No. 5-ranked 157-pounder Tyler Goebel scored a 2-0 win over Augsburg's No. 4-ranked Karsen Otis (SO, Combined Locks, Wis./Kimberly HS), and No. 10-ranked 141-pounder Sam Lorenz claimed an 8-3 win over Augsburg's Austin Gabbert (SR, Lester Prairie, Minn./Watertown-Mayer HS).

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Augsburg is now 14-7-1 all-time against UW-La Crosse.
• Against opponents from Divisions II and III, Augsburg is now 384-58-1 in dual meets since the 1989-90 season. Augsburg has lost just 54 matches to non-Division I opponents since the 1995-96 season.
