Auggies claim title at competitive North Central Invite

NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- Winning five of the 10 weight-class titles and claiming 18 placewinners among its 27 competitors, the No. 2-ranked Augsburg University men's wrestling team won the North Central University Invitational, held on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg's 27 wrestlers compiled a 103-34 record (.752) in the 17-team tournament, with 68 bonus-point victories (37 pins, 14 technical falls, 10 major decisions). Seven nationally-ranked teams in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III national poll competed at the tournament, which Augsburg won with 178.5 points, outdistancing second-place Coe (Iowa) with 130.0 points.
• The Willis brothers -- 141-pounder Cade Willis (SR, Kansasville, Wis./Union Grove HS) and 165-pounder Cooper Willis (SR, Kansasville, Wis./Union Grove HS) -- both won weight-class titles for the Auggies. Cooper Willis, ranked No. 2 nationally at 165, went 5-0 with two pins and two major decisions to earn the title, with a 12-3 major decision win over No. 11-ranked Bo Koedam of Coe in the semifinals and a 7-3 win over No. 5-ranked Andrew Supers of Baldwin Wallace (Ohio) in the finals. Willis is now 17-1 on the season and 115-16 in his college career. Of his 17 wins this season, 12 are bonus-point wins (seven pins, one technical fall, four major decisions).
• Cade Willis improved to 11-4 on the season with five victories on Saturday, scoring a 10-2 major decision win over No. 13-ranked Dresden Grimm of Coe in the semifinals, and a 4-1 win in sudden-victory overtime over his teammate, No. 10-ranked Cole Becker (SR, Albertville, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS), in the finals. Cade Willis also had a pin in his winning run. Becker went 3-1 with two technical falls to finish second at 141.
• No. 4-ranked 184-pounder Brandt Bombard (SR, North Branch, Minn./North Branch HS) scored three pins among his four wins to claim his weight-class title, improving to 16-1 on the season with five pins and three major decisions. He scored a 4:44 pin over Mike Taheny of Wabash (Ind.) in the finals, his third straight win by pin.
• Ethan Winkelman (SO, Hudson, Wis./Hudson HS), ranked No. 6 at 197, improved to 16-1 on the year with four victories, his first three wins by pin, to win his weight class. Winkelman now has eight pins, three technical falls and two major decisions among his 16 victories.
• The 285-pound weight class came down to a battle of Auggies -- No. 6-ranked Tyler Raway (SR, Wyoming, Minn./Forest Lake HS) and Keegan Kuball (FY, Waterville, Minn./Waterville-Elysian-Morristown HS), as both reached the finals with four wins -- Raway with a pin and major decision, and Kuball with two pins and a technical fall. Raway won the final by a 5-3 decision in an overtime tiebreaker, moving to 15-2 on the season. Kuball suffered his first loss of the season, now 17-1.
• Top-ranked 149-pounder Matthew Randolph (SO, Jordan, Minn./Jordan HS (Scott West)) reached the finals in his weight class with three wins, including a major decision, but suffered a 9-3 defeat to No. 3-ranked Dominik Malinder of Wisconsin-Whitewater in the finals -- their second meeting of the season after Randolph's 2-0 win on Dec. 4. Randolph is now 17-1 on the year.
• No. 4-ranked 157-pounder Karsen Otis (SO, Combined Locks, Wis./Kimberly HS) went 5-1 on the day, with two pins and two technical falls, to finish in second place. His lone loss was a 4-2 decision to No. 10-ranked Rhenzo Augusto of Elmhurst (Ill.) in the finals. Otis is now 18-1 on the season with five pins, two technical falls and two major decisions.
• Chance Suddeth (JR, Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton HS) went 4-1 with two pins, a technical fall and a major decision, to finish third at 133 pounds, claiming a 6:45 pin of No. 4-ranked James Day of Wabash in the third-place match. 
• Cole Dummer (FY, Union Grove, Wis./Union Grove HS) went 5-1 with a pin, two technical falls and a major decision to finish third at 157, and Ethan Swenson (FY, Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS) went 4-1 with a pin and two major decisions to place third at 197.
• Lucas Jagodzinske (SR, Sherburn, Minn./Martin County West HS) finished in fourth place at 149 pounds, as did Owen Griesbach (FY, Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield HS) at 184.
• Nick Alexander (JR, Kaukauna, Wis./Wrightstown HS) finished in sixth place at 174, Keno Vanier (SR, Edina, Minn./Richfield HS) finished in seventh at 125, Apollo Ashby (SO, Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS) finished in seventh at 174, and Gavin Hilyar (JR, Elk River, Minn./Elk River HS) finished eighth at 133.

UP NEXT
• Augsburg is idle for the holiday break, and returns to action on Jan. 2 at 2 p.m., with a dual meet at Division II Augustana University in Sioux Falls, S.D.
