Makem qualifies for fourth national tournament

INDIANOLA, Iowa -- Nina Makem (SR, Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS) became the seventh women's wrestler in Augsburg University history to qualify for four national tournaments and the first Auggie to reach the 100 mark in career victories, reaching the National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championships with a third-place finish at 138 pounds at the Region VII Regional, held on Saturday at Simpson College.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Makem opened her tournament run with a 10-0, 41-second technical fall over teammate Kelsey Cruz Rojas (FY, Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS). She dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 5-ranked Nanea Estrella of Iowa, but bounced back with a pair of technical falls -- 10-0 in 1:39 over Diann Smith of Sioux Falls (Iowa) and 10-0 in 2:56 over Paige Gershmel of Simpson (Iowa) in the 138-pound third-place match. Makem is now 16-3 on the season with nine technical falls and five pins.
• Makem is the first Augsburg women's wrestler to reach the 100 mark in career victories, now 100-19 in her career with 52 technical falls and 28 pins -- all three totals Augsburg career records.
• Makem will compete in her fourth NCWWC tournament on March 7-8 at the Xtream Arena in Coralville, Iowa, aiming for her fourth All-American finish. She finished second at 136 pounds in 2022, fifth at 136 in 2023 and eighth at 155 in 2024. 
• Seven Auggies competed at the regional meet on Saturday. Cruz Rojas went 3-3 with two pins and a technical fall to finish sixth at 138 pounds. She finished her inaugural college campaign at 9-6 with five pins and three technical falls.
Gisele Gallegos (FY, South St. Paul, Minn./South St. Paul HS) went 2-2 with a technical fall at 117 pounds, finishing her season at 13-12.
Madison Horn (SR, Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) went 1-2 with a pin at 160 pounds, going 9-7 on the season. She finished her college career with a 39-46 career record with nine technical falls and 22 pins -- the fourth-most pins in program history.
Hannah Wigern (FY, Hutchinson, Minn./Hutchinson HS) went 0-2 at 131 pounds, as did Aleka London (SO, Park Rapids, Minn./Park Rapids HS) at 145 and Katie Whelan (FY, Harmony, Minn./Fillmore Central HS) at 180.
