PROVIDENCE, R.I. --  The Augsburg University men's wrestling team will have two finalists in Saturday night's finals, entering one of the closest team races in history at the NCAA Division III National Championships at the Amica Mutual Pavilion.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Going into Saturday's 6 p.m. (Central time) final session, which features the national title matches in all 10 weight classes, Augsburg stands in third place in the team race with 74.0 points, while Wartburg (Iowa) is in second place with 74.5 points, and host school Johnson & Wales (R.I.) has 75.5 points. All three teams have two finalists each, with none facing each other. 
• Augsburg has two finalists -- No. 3-seeded 165-pounder Cooper Willis (JR, Kansasville, Wis./Union Grove HS) and No. 3-seeded 184-pounder Brandt Bombard (JR, North Branch, Minn./North Branch HS). 
• Willis improved to 30-1 on the season and 98-14 in his career with a 5-0 victory over No. 7-seed Brayden Peet of Wisconsin-Whitewater in Saturday's semifinals. Willis claimed a takedown 30 seconds into the match, an escape in the second period and had 1:53 of riding time to pick up the victory.
• A three-time All-American with fifth-place finishes each of the last two seasons, Willis will face top seed Matt Lackman of Alvernia (Pa.) in Saturday's finals. The two have met just once in their collegiate careers, with Lackman winning 6-0 in last season's consolation semifinals at 165.
• Competing in his first season as a varsity starter for the Auggies, Bombard reached the finals with an 11-2 major decision win over No. 7-seeded Tyler Withers of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (N.Y.). Bombard scored takedowns in each period and built 2:21 of riding time to reach the finals, improving to 28-5 on the season and 54-22 in his career.
• Bombard will face No. 5-seed Marcus Orlandoni of Wisconsin-La Crosse in Saturday's finals. The two are 1-1 against each other this season, with Orlandoni claiming a 4-2 win at the NWCA Division III National Duals semifinals on Jan. 11, and Bombard topping Orlandoni 5-3 in the finals of the NCAA Division III Region VII Regional on March 1.

THREE PLACEWINNERS ON SATURDAY AFTERNOON

• Seventh-seeded 174-pounder Seth Goetzinger (SR, Chatfield, Minn./Chatfield HS) capped his three-time All-American career with a third-place finish, finishing his season at 25-5 and his career at 97-26. He had finished seventh at 174 each of the prior two seasons.
• In Saturday's semifinals, he was edged 4-3 by No. 3-seed Nathan Lackman of Alvernia, but he rallied back with a dominant performance in a 15-6 major decision over No. 5-seed L.J. Richardson of Coe (Iowa), his second win in three career meetings with Richardson. He built a 10-1 lead on the strength of two takedowns and a four-point near-fall in the first period, then gained another takedown and 1:49 of riding time in the third period after Richardson cut the lead to 10-5. In the third-place match, Goetzinger was dominant again, scoring his second straight major decision with a 20-9 triumph over No. 6-seed Dejan Glaster of Millikin (Ill.). Goetzinger claimed three takedowns, a pair of four-point near-falls and a reversal to build an insurmountable lead. 
Matthew Randolph battles an opponent during a 2024-25 Augsburg men's wrestling match.• No. 4-seed Matthew Randolph (FY, Jordan, Minn./Jordan HS (Scott West)) ended his outstanding rookie season with a fourth-place finish at 149 pounds, finishing his campaign at 31-4. In the semifinal, he dropped an 8-1 decision to top-seed Hayden Brown of Johnson & Wales, surrendering a takedown and four-point near-fall in the closing seconds of the first period.
• A reversal with 15 seconds left in the second period provided the only points Randolph needed in a 2-1 win over No. 3-seed Colby Frost of Southern Maine in the consolation semifinals. In the third-place match, Randolph was edged 3-1 by No. 6-seed Kyler Romero of Wartburg. Romero was able to ride Randolph for the entire second period, then claimed a reversal with 56 seconds left in the third period to score the win.
Chance Suddeth celebrates his seventh-place finish at the NCAA Division III National Championships.• Chance Suddeth (SO, Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton HS) ended his second national tournament trip with his first All-American honor, placing seventh at 133 pounds. Unseeded in the field, he suffered a 19-4, third-period technical fall loss to No. 5-seed Jaden Hinton of Baldwin Wallace (Ohio) in the consolation quarterfinals, dropping him to the seventh-place match. 
• Against Connor Kidd of Luther (Iowa), Suddeth claimed an early takedown, then scored his first pin of the tournament, a 1:50 triumph, to end his sophomore season at 29-8. He is now 50-16 in his collegiate career.

UP NEXT
• The NCAA meet concludes at 6 p.m. (Central time) on Saturday with the 10 national championship matches. The Parade of All-Americans will begin at 5:30 p.m. (Central time) at the Amica Mutual Pavilion.
