Hookom, Bati win MIAC track and field titles

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. -- Allison Hookom (JR, Anoka, Minn./Anoka HS) won conference titles in the women's 400- and 600-meter dashes, and Mohammed Bati (JR, Dodola, Ethiopia/GAP School) won the league crown in the men's 5,000-meter run, while finishing second in the 3,000-meter run, leading the Augsburg University track and field teams at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Indoor Championships, held Friday and Saturday at Saint John's University.

WOMEN'S HIGHLIGHTS
• Hookom claimed the 400-meter dash title for the second time in her career in a personal-best and facility-record 57.01 seconds, while winning the 600-meter dash for the second straight season in 1:35.46. Hookom has now won four MIAC championships in her college career, and has earned All-MIAC (top three) finishes six times, while earning All-MIAC Honorable Mention (finishes 4 to 6) finishes three times. Hookom also finished seventh in the 200-meter dash, with a season-best 26.30-second effort.
Among NCAA Division III runners nationally, Hookom now has the 19th-fastest time in the 400-meter dash.
Alwena Brix (FY, Plouay, France/Lycee Jean Mace, Rennes) finished in 11th place in the 800-meter run in a personal-best 2:28.77, nearly a six-second improvement from the beginning of the season.
Nacia Griffin (FY, Golden Valley, Minn./Hopkins HS) finished in 21st place in the 60-meter dash in 8.42 seconds.
• As a team, Augsburg finished 11th with 22 points.

MEN'S HIGHLIGHTS
• Bati earned the 5,000-meter run championship on Friday with a 14:38.06 effort, marking his second indoor conference title in the event. He won the indoor 5K title in 2023, while placing second last year. It's Bati's fourth conference title of his collegiate career, as he also captured the outdoor titles in the 5,000- and 10,000-meter runs last year. Bati claimed this year's 5,000-meter crown by a 12-second margin over the second-place finisher.
• On Saturday, he finished second in the 3,000-meter run on Saturday in 8:23.52, just being edged by 0.62 seconds by St. Scholastica senior Lars Dewall.
Among NCAA Division III runners nationally, Bati has the ninth-fastest time nationally (14.15.33) in the 5,000-meter run and 22nd-fastest time (8:18.21) in the 3,000-meter run.
Brandon Travis (FY, Baton Rouge, La./Juan Seguin HS (Texas)) made an impressive debut in MIAC championship competition, finishing in the top 15 in three events. He finished fifth in the triple jump in a season-best 13.42 meters (44-feet-0.5), placed 10th in the 60-meter dash in a season-best 7.09 seconds, and finished 12th in the long jump with a 6.30-meter (20-feet-8.0) leap.
• Augsburg competed in two relays at the MIAC meet. The 4x200-meter relay of Success Famuyide (JR, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Osseo HS), Cornelius Irby (FY, Minneapolis, Minn./Robbinsdale Cooper HS), Evan Bitengo (FY, Coon Rapids, Minn./Anoka HS) and Carlton Onyia (FY, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park HS) finished eighth in 1:38.40, and the distance medley relay of Kevin Romero Rivera (FY, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Columbia Heights HS), Bitengo, Paul Yang (FY, St. Paul, Minn./Washington Tech Magnet HS) and Henry Nelson (JR, St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) finished 10th in 11:38.10.
• As a team, Augsburg finished 10th with 23 points.

• Augsburg will compete at the Wartburg College NCAA Final Qualifier next Friday and Saturday (3/7-8) in Waverly, Iowa, and at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse NCAA Final Qualifier next Saturday.
