Auggies stage dramatic rally for split with Saints

MINNEAPOLIS -- Rallying from a 8-2 deficit in the eighth inning, the Augsburg University baseball team claimed a 9-8, 11-inning victory over the College of St. Scholastica, taking a split of a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Parade Stadium. St. Scholastica scored a 1-0 win in Sunday's opener.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• St. Scholastica scored its lone run in the top of the first inning, and Augsburg was unable to get a run across, stranding seven runners on base in the game off of five hits and two walks.
Austin Lang (JR, Anoka, Minn./Anoka HS) pitched a stellar game for the Auggies, striking out six against two walks and six hits in 6.2 innings of work, throwing 88 pitches. Manny Weiss (JR, Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar HS) threw the final out of the seventh for the Auggies.
Drew Jenkins hit two doubles in going 2-for-3 at the plate in the first game. Andruw Vela (SO, St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) also went 2-for-3.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• Augsburg trailed 8-2 in the middle of the eighth inning, but tied the game with threeruns in the bottom of the eighth and three runs in the bottom of the ninth, then gained the win with a walk-off run in the bottom ot the 11th.
• Leading off the 11th, Adam Marshall (SR, Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) reached base on a dropped fly ball, then moved to second on a wild pitch and to third on a sacrifice bunt by Tyson LaPoint (SO, Rice Lake, Wis./Rice Lake HS). Harrison Boughton (FY, Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) pinch ran for Marshall, and aftera pair of walks to load the bases, Jenkins drove home Boughton on a walk-off single to left.
• Augsburg scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, with Marshall driving home Jorda Sivoravong (FY, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Osseo HS) on an RBI single, Josh Udelhofen (SR, Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig HS) plating Vela on a sacrifice fly, and Jenkins bringing home Marshall after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. 
• The Auggies used three hits and took advantage of two St. Scholastica errors to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth, all with two outs. Vela hit a single, and Marshall reached base on a throwing error. Udelhofen gained first base on a bloop single and moved to second on a throwing error, with Vela and Marshall scoring, and pinch-runner Jimmy Hemera (SR, Christchurch, New Zealand/Hillmorton HS) scored on a double by Elijah Stewart (FY, Hopkins, Minn./Hopkins HS).
• NIck Hubbard (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) hit a single to bring home Marshall in the second, and Stanley Regguinti (JR, St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) hit a one-out triple in the third inning, and scored on a Sivoravong groundout.
• Augsburg used five pitchers in the second game, with Caleb Tays (SO, Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake Park HS) getting the victory with three innings of scoreless relief, striking out four against two walks and two hits. Starter Myer Schmitz (SR, Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) had two strikeouts in four innings of work.

FOR THE FOES
• Kyle Oswald went 2-for-3 in the first game, scoring the lone run for St. Scholastica.
• Sam Shopwell had two hits, including a triple, in the second game.

UP NEXT

• Augsburg hosts Saint Mary's University in a MIAC doubleheader on Wednesday (4/9) at 2:30 p.m. at Parade Stadium.
