Augsburg University marks a new chapter in its storied athletic history today (Monday 6/9/25), as Amy Cooper joins us as our new athletic director. This milestone, several years in the making, was guided by the findings of the Commission on the Future of Auggie Athletics in preparation for a leadership transition at the end of the 2024ā25 academic year.
Cooper will provide strategic leadership to advance the vision adopted by the commission in 2023:Ā
We believe Auggie Athletics plays a vital role in living out the university's student-centered mission and in sharing Augsburg's values with the world. The Auggie athletics experience opens doors, creates belonging and connection among students, fosters personal growth and well-being, builds critical skills, and supports the values of our learning community. Auggie student-athletes also serve as ambassadors of Augsburg's mission as they compete, volunteer in our neighborhood, and participate as citizens of our community. Building on the remarkable legacy of Augsburg athletes, coaches, alumni, and leaders, we are called on to further strengthen Auggie athletics and unite our university community to ensure we meet our promise to every student-athlete.
The commission, which was co-chaired by two Auggie alumni and included faculty, staff, and students, led an external program review by a consultancy that specializes in the unique environment of intercollegiate athletics. One of their key recommendations was to adopt a revised administrative structure, including a new senior associate athletic director role, to centralize oversight of internal operations.Ā
"This is a momentous transition for our alumni, supporters, and the entire Augsburg family," said President Paul C. Pribbenow. "It's not easy to say goodbye, whether to valued colleagues or to an era in the life of the university. But I'm confident that thanks to the legacy of success built by Jeff Swenson and many others, the future of Auggie athletics under
Amy Cooper's leadership is bright."Ā
