MINNEAPOLIS (4/1/00) -- Luther College (Iowa) dominated play in the first contest, then scratched together a three-run ninth inning to claim victory in the second game, sweeping a nonconference softball doubleheader from host Augsburg College on Saturday, 8-2 and 3-0.
Augsburg dropped to 3-11 overall with the loss, while Luther improved to 8-7 overall.
In the first contest, the Norse used timely hitting and took advantage of five Auggie errors to score the easy win. Holly Wendt (Sr., Madison, Wis./Madison Memorial HS) went 2-for-4, scoring three runs and driving in one. She had a double in the contest. Sarah Edwards (Sr., Boone, Iowa/Gilbert HS) and Kindel McLaughlin (So., Alpha, Ill./Alwood HS) also went 2-for-4 at the plate. McLaughlin had a double and drove in two runs.
The Auggies could muster just two hits in the contest, both singles by
Tully Kaiser (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS). Kaiser and
Rachael Ekholm (So., Richfield, Minn.) scored Augsburg's runs.
Jennifer Hohrmann (So., Des Moines, Iowa/North HS) picked up the pitching win in the first ame, striking out nine while walking three.
Kristi Smith (Sr., Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato HS) took the loss for the Auggies.
The second game was a pitcher's duel between Augsburg's Ekholm and Caren Hanson (So., Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) of Luther. Both struck out three hitters and allowed four hits each.
Neither team could put any runs across until the second extra inning, though each had several opportunities. Augsburg had runners reach third base in three innings -- including runners in both the eighth and ninth frames -- with one being put out at the plate. Luther had runners reach third once in the fourth inning before the ninth-inning rally.
In Luther's ninth, Flom reached base on a walk, and was driven to third on a double by Nicole Vermett (Fr., Harvard, Ill.). A walk to McLaughlin followed, and Flom was driven home on a single by Megan Robinson (Fr., Cedar Falls, Iowa). Consecutive fielder's choices drove home both Vermett and Robinson.

Augsburg opens Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Tuesday (4/4), hosting Concordia-Moorhead at 4 p.m. at the University of Minnesota's Bierman Softball Complex in Minneapolis. Because of athletic facility work at Augsburg, the remainder of Augsburg's home schedule will be played at the Bierman Softball Complex.
