Rachael Ekholm (So., Richfield, Minn.) drove home the game-winning run in the eighth inning of the first game and
Tully Kaiser (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) went 6-for-8 in the doubleheader with seven stolen bases as Augsburg College swept Bethel College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball doubleheader on Tuesday at the University of Minnesota's Bierman Softball Complex. Augsburg won the first game 6-5 in eight innings, then topped the Royals 6-1 in the second game.
Augsburg moves to 8-12 overall and 5-1 in the MIAC, while Bethel drops to 3-15-1 overall and 1-5 in the MIAC.
After leading 3-0 in the first inning of the first game, the Auggies lost the lead and fell behind 5-3 entering the bottom of the seventh, as Bethel scored a run in the sixth and two runs in the seventh. The Royals took advantage of five Augsburg errors, as just one run was earned against Augsburg pitcher Ekholm. Sara Carlson (Sr., St. Paul, Minn.) scored on a bases-loaded walk in the sixth, and Karrie Bateman (Fr., St. Paul, Minn.) and Emily Conover (Fr., Crystal, Minn.) scored in the seventh to give the Royals the lead.
In Augsburg's half of the seventh, pinch runner
Mindy Evers (So., Comfrey, Minn.) scored on a wild pitch, and
Jennie LaManna (So., South St. Paul, Minn.) tied the game at 5-5, scoring on a pinch-hit double by
Jessica Norman (Jr., Lakeville, Minn.).
Pitcher Ekholm set down the side in order in Bethel's half of the eighth inning. In Augsburg's half, Kaiser reached base on a singe and stole second. After a sacrifice bunt by
Kristi Smith (Sr., Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato HS) moved Kaiser to third, Ekholm's single to right field drove in Kaiser with the game-winning run.
Kaiser went 4-for-4 at the plate and had a walk, reaching base all five times she was at the plate. She went 5-for-5 stealing bases in the first game. Ekholm went 2-for-5 with a run-scoring triple and two RBI.
Emily Miller (Sr., Blaine, Minn.) and LaManna each went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
For Bethel, Bateman went 3-for-5 in the first contest. Carlson took the loss on the mound in the first game.
The second contest featured a strong pitching performance by Augsburg's Smith, who allowed just three hits and one walk while striking out two and allowing only one unearned run. Smith also produced at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBI, including a double.
Kaiser went 2-for-4 at the plate, stealing two bases. Kaiser now has 144 career base hits, just two away from Augsburg's school record of 146, set by Michelle Boyer (1985, 1987-89). She expanded her school record for career stolen bases to 89, as she is 18-for-19 stealing bases this season.
Jennifer Lemke (Fr., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) went 2-for-3 with a run-scoring double.
Bethel's lone run of the second game came in the seventh, as Lindsey Porter (Jr., Tustin, Calif.) came home on two Auggie errors to spoil the shutout. The Royals were limited to just three hits in the game. Christine Bokinskie (Fr., Alexandria, Minn.) took the pitching loss for the Royals, striking out three.
Augsburg, which has won five of its last six games, plays at MIAC-leader St. Mary's on Thursday (4/13) at 4 p.m. in Winona, Minn. Bethel plays at St. Olaf on Thursday at 4 p.m. in Northfield, Minn.
