Auggies drop doubleheader at MIAC leader St Mary's 9-1 and 8-0

Huegel's hits park SMU sweep -- By Joel Badzinski/Winona Daily News

WINONA, Minn. (4/13/00) -- Jackie Huegel finds her own batting average laughable.

Huegel, a freshman shortstop for the Saint Mary's University fastpitch softball team, went 5-for-6 with four RBIs Thursday as the Cardinals swept a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader from Augsburg College, 9-1 and 8-0. Both games were five innings.

Huegel started the day with a team-leading .547 batting average. When that lofty number was mentioned to her, Huegel could only chuckle.

"I'm surprised I'm hitting that well, but I know that I've learned a lot this year," Huegel said. "Coach (John) Tschida teaches you so many little things, every game, every batting practice there's something new to learn."

Huegel was a four-time all-conference player for New Hampton High School (Iowa) and followed her brothers, Benji and Brad, to SMU. Benji Huegel is an assistant coach for the baseball team and Brad is a junior first baseman.

Tschida said Huegel's batting ability is a work in progress.

"In high school, she wasn't the best hitter; she didn't crush the ball," he said. "But she is a good athlete. Now, she's a little like (junior) Jill Hocking when she was a freshman. She has a knack for getting the bat on the ball and once we get the kinks out of her swing, she'll be hitting really well."

Any kinks in Huegel's swing were well-hidden Thursday. She went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a stolen base in Game 1 and went 3-for-3 with a double, triple and two more RBIs in Game 2, lifting her batting average to .576.

"When I get up to the plate, I'm always thinking about getting on base somehow," Huegel said. "I felt good today. I was waiting for my pitch and that's probably the key for me."

In Game 1, Huegel helped SMU (7-1 MIAC, 18-5 overall) take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs, Hocking ripped a double, Angie Wright tripled to score Hocking, and Huegel singled for what stood as the game-winning RBI.

Huegel added an RBI single in the two-run third, and SMU scored five times in the fourth.

The Cardinals had 10 hits and four walks off Auggies starter Kristi Smith (2-7).

Hocking allowed four hits and a walk, striking out four, to earn her 11th win of the season. She also went 3-for-3 with two RBIs.

Augsburg (5-3 MIAC, 8-14 overall) scored a run on two hits, a walk and a passed ball in the fourth inning.

"Jill wasn't as sharp today, she was missing spots and not getting ahead of batters,'' Tschida said, "but it says a lot about her and about our defense that we got out of the innings."

Game 2 belonged to SMU starter Teisha Smith, who allowed only one baserunner to get as far as third base -- and that was after an error. Smith (5-2) surrendered four hits and two walks while striking out four.

"She had all three of her pitches today and her changeup was as good as it's been,'' Tschida said. "That allowed her to get ahead of the batters. She also had some good fielding plays."

Smith had two putouts and an assist in working a 1-2-3 third inning.

The Cardinals scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning off Rachael Ekholm (6-5) to take control. Wright and Huegel had RBI hits and a run scored on a passed ball.

Niki Lynch hit a sacrifice fly in the second inning to make it 4-0. In the third, Huegel belted an RBI triple and Kateri Eddy added an RBI double. Becky Limberg's RBI single with two outs in the fifth ended the game.

"We just didn't get the hits when we needed them in the first game,'' Augsburg coach Carol Enke said. "We made some errors early in the second game to help them get some momentum, then they got a few more hits and the momentum didn't shift back."

SMU plays Carleton at 1 p.m. Saturday in Northfield, Minn. Augsburg hosts a doubleheader against St. Thomas on Saturday (4/15) at 3 p.m. at the University of Minnesota's Bierman Softball Complex. The doubleheader will serve as Augsburg's 75th anniversary of athletics' alumni celebration for softball.
