MINNEAPOLIS (4/17/00) --
Tully Kaiser (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) set an Augsburg College career record for base hits on Monday, as her Auggies claimed a split with Northwestern College-Roseville in a nonconference softball doubleheader Tuesday night at the University of Minnesota's Bierman Softball Complex. Augsburg won the first game 5-2, but lost the second 4-3 in 10 innings.
After going 0-for-2 in the first game with a run scored, Kaiser gained the school's career hits record in her third at-bat in the second game, fittingly for the team's leadoff hitter, on an infield single. She added another hit in the eighth inning to give her 148 career hits, two better than the previous record, set by Michelle Boyer (1985, 1987-89). Kaiser also holds the school's career records for runs scored (120) and stolen bases (93). Kaiser had four stolen bases in the doubleheader, including three in the second game.
The Auggies scored five runs in the first three innings to claim the winning margin in the first game.
Rachael Ekholm (So., Richfield, Minn.) had a triple and scored two runs for the Auggies, while
Emily Miller (Sr., Blaine, Minn.) scored a run and had a two-run single.
Kristi Smith (Sr., Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato HS) scored a run and drove in one, while
Jennie LaManna (So., South St. Paul, Minn.) also drove in a run.
Ekholm picked up the pitching win in the first game, striking out seven while allowing five walks and five hits. Both of Northwestern's runs were unearned. Sarah Alberhasky (Fr., Clive, Iowa) took the loss for the Eagles, striking out five. Alberhasky had a double for Northwestern, while Jen Maier (Sr., Woodward, Iowa) had two hits in three at-bats.
Northwestern rallied from a 3-2 deficit in the second game to tie the contest in the seventh inning and claim the win in the 10th. Smith started the game pitching for the Auggies, allowing two unearned runs in the fourth inning before giving way to Ekholm in relief in the seventh. But Northwestern tied the game in the sevneth after loading the bases with nobody out. Maier tied the game scoring after Alberhasky reached base on a one-out error.
After two scoreless extra innings, Northwestern claimed a victory with a run in its half of the 10th inning. Alberhasky reached base on a single, went to second on a passed ball, was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Kari Gilberts (Jr., Ridgeland, Wis.) and came home on a fielder's choice by Jenni Bergren (So., Mora, Minn.). Augsburg had three runners reach base in the bottom of the 10th, but could not score against Northwestern reliever Erica Dabelow (Fr., Cannon Falls, Minn.), who pitched three scoreless extra innings.
Bergren had a run-scoring double in the fourth inning, part of a two-RBI night in the second game. Holly Sabelman (Jr., Menlo Park, Calif.) went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Maier also went 2-for-4 in the game.
Augsburg was paced by Smith, who went 3-for-4 with a run driven in. Kaiser had two hits, as did
Jennifer Lemke (Fr., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS). Miller, Augsburg's first-baseman, set a school single-game record with 15 putouts.
Augsburg hosts a doubleheader against St. Catherine on Wednesday (4/19) at 7:15 p.m. at the University of Minnesota's Bierman Softball Complex.
