Rachael Ekholm (So., Richfield, Minn.) pitched the first game victory and had a solo home run and triple in the second game to lead Augsburg College to a sweep of host Macalester College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball doubleheader Tuesday at Shaw Field. Augsburg won the first game 5-3 and the second 15-4 in five innings.
With the victories, Augsburg improves to 13-15 overall and 9-3 in the MIAC. Macalester drops to 2-24-2 overall and 0-11-1 in the MIAC.
Ekholm hit her solo home run as part of a three-run third inning, and notched her triple in a five-run fifth inning that clinched the win and allowed the Auggies to end the game early via the eight-run rule. In the doubleheader, Ekholm went 4-for-6 with four runs scored and four RBI.
Augsburg rallied from a 3-0 fifth-inning defict in the first game with a five-run sixth frame to clinch the victory. Augsburg sent nine batters to the plate in the sixth, taking advantage of six hits, including a two-run single by Ekholm, a two-run double by
Jennifer Lemke (Fr., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) and a run-scoring single by
Erika Skiba (So., Minneapolis, Minn./Roosevelt HS).
Ekholm, Lemke and
Emily Miller (Sr., Blaine, Minn.) had two hits apiece in the fist game. Ekholm struck out four Scots while walking two to earn the pitching win in the first game.
Macalester scored a single run in the fourth inning and two in the fifth. Elissa Larkin (Fr., Mundelein, Ill./Illinois Math and Science Academy) and Kathryn Miles (Sr., Surrey, B.C./Lord Tweedsmuir HS) had two doubles apiece in the game. Jackie Chavez (Jr., Santa Fe, N.M.) took the pitching loss for the Scots.
After failing to score a run in the first two innings of the second game, the Auggies jumped on the Scots in the latter frames, scoring three runs in the third, seven runs in the fourth and five runs in the fifth. Augsburg pounded out 14 hits in the game. Eight of the nine Auggie starters each had at least one hit in the contest. Augsburg sent 12 batters to the plate in the fourth inning.
The Auggies also stole six bases, keyed by four from
Tully Kaiser (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS), who now has a school-record 100 on her career. She also holds Augsburg's career records for base hits (154) and runs scored (125).
Kaiser, Ekholm, Miller and Lemke had two hits apiece in the game. Ekholm had a home run and triple, Miller had a triple and double and Lemke had a double.
Smith allowed nine hits and four earned runs to pick up the pitching win for the Auggies. Miles suffered the pitching loss, with Chavez pitching in relief.
Miles, Stephanie Aldock (Sr., Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman HS) and Cristin Beach (So., Colton, Calif./Alta Loma HS) had two hits apiece for Macalester.
Augsburg hosts Gustavus Adolphus in an MIAC doubleheader on Thursday (4/27) at 7:15 p.m. at the University of Minnesota's Bierman Softball Complex in Minneapolis, while Macalester hosts St. Benedict Thursday at 4 p.m.
