MINNEAPOLIS (4/27/00) -- Ellie Roscher (So., Mendota Heights, Minn.) drove in the game-winning run on a double in the eighth inning of the first game, and Angie Hendrickson (Sr., Loretto, Minn./Rockford HS) and Katie Thompson (So., Stillwater, Minn.) combined for a three-hit shutout in the second game, as Gustavus Adolphus College swept host Augsburg College 3-2 (8 innings) and 8-0 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball doubleheader Thursday night at the University of Minnesota's Bierman Softball Complex.
Gustavus improves to 13-11 overall and 8-6 in the MIAC with the victories, while Augsburg drops to 13-17 overall and 9-5 in the MIAC. The Auggies' four-game winning streak was snapped with the sweep.
With one out in the eighth inning of the first game, Gustavus' Julie Langenfeld (Fr., Rosemount, Minn.) reached base on a single. After being moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jill Anderson (So., Big Lake, Minn.), Roscher hit a double to deep center field to drive in Anderson. Roscher came in to score after Sarah Holm (Fr., Charles City, Iowa) reached base on an Auggie fielding error -- one of six Auggie errors committed in the first game.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Gustie pitcher Hope Grover (Jr., Henderson, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson HS) retired the Auggies in order to clinch the win.
Augsburg scored its lone run of the game in the first inning, when leadoff hitter
Tully Kaiser (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) singled, stole second, advanced to third on a throwing error and came in to score on a single by
Kristi Smith (Sr., Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato HS).
The Gusties tied the game in the third, when Holm scored on a single by Michelle Zaske (Jr., Owatonna, Minn.). Zaske and Langenfeld had two hits apiece to lead the Gusties.
Tied 1-1 going into the bottom of the seventh, Augsburg had a chance to win the game, loading the bases on a hit batter, walk and single with just one out. But Grover was able to escape the potential game-deciding jam by getting the next two batters out, including a called third strike against Smith to force the game into extra innings. Holm struck out seven Auggies while walking three and allowing six hits.
Smith had two hits to lead the Auggies at the plate.
Rachael Ekholm (So., Richfield, Minn.) took the pitching loss for the Auggies, striking out six.
Gustavus dominated the second game, pounding out nine hits and scoring runs in six of the seven innings. Roscher, Langenfeld, Holm and Nikki Woehrle (Sr., Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS) had two hits apiece for the Gusties. Holm added a double and Woehrle had a triple.
Hendrickson pitched the first five innings, allowing just two hits while striking out two and allowing just five baserunners. Thompson pitched the final two innings, allowing just a double by
Emily Miller (Sr., Blaine, Minn.) in the seventh inning. Smith took the loss for the Auggies, despite striking out four.
Augsburg plays at Carleton in an MIAC doubleheader on Saturday (4/29) in Northfield, Minn., while Gustavus hosts Bethel on Saturday in St. Peter, Minn. Both doubleheaders start at 1 p.m.
