Tully Kaiser ties Minnesota state SBs record, Auggies drop two to St. Thomas

| By:
MINNEAPOLIS (4/27/00) -- Augsburg College's Tully Kaiser (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) tied a Minnesota collegiate record for career stolen bases on Sunday, but the University of St. Thomas got the best of the host Auggies by scoring a sweep in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball doubleheader at the University of Minnesota's Bierman Softball Complex. The Tommies won 4-3 and 7-1.

Kaiser tied the Minnesota collegiate (all divisions) softball record for career stolen bases with two thefts in the doubleheader, one in the first inning of the first game and the other in the fifth inning of the second game. She now has 104 career stolen bases, tied with St. Thomas' Jessica Boumeester (1996-99) for the most stolen bases among any Minnesota collegian and tied for ninth place in NCAA Division III history.

Boumeester and Kaiser are the only two MIAC softball players ever to record at least 100 career stolen bases, 100 career runs scored and 100 career base hits. By going 2-for-4 in the doubleheader with two runs scored, Kaiser now has 159 career hits, 126 career runs and 104 career steals. Boumeester finished her career last season with 177 hits, 148 runs and 104 steals.

Kaiser played softball at Augsburg for three seasons (1996-98), before being forced to miss the 1999 season battling Meniere's Disease, an inner-ear disorder that affects equilibrium and motor coordination. She could not do any athletic activity for at least eight months, before being cleared to return to school and to the softball team for the 2000 season. She has 33 stolen bases this season, tying her 1998 single-season school record. Kaiser has the top four single-season stolen-base performances in school history.

With the sweep of the Auggies on Sunday, St. Thomas improves to 29-8 overall and 15-1 in the MIAC, while Augsburg drops to 13-21 overall and 9-9 in the MIAC. Augsburg has now lost its last six games in a row.

Augsburg led the first game 3-1 after three innings, but the Tommies came back with two runs in the fourth and the winning run in the seventh. Jessica Matthes (Sr., Farmington, Minn.) drove in two runs on a single in the third. Casey Courson (Jr., Spring Park, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS) drove in Shannon Moore (Fr., Kenilworth, Ill./New Trier HS) with the eventual game-winning run on a two-out single in the seventh.

Courson had re-entered the game at pitcher in the seventh after pitching the first five innings before being relieved by Stacy Tamble (Fr., Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS) in the sixth. Courson struck out three Auggies to pick up the win, while Tamble struck out one Auggie in her one inning of work. The two combined to limit Augsburg to just three hits in the first game.

Sarah Grudnowski (Jr., Deephaven, Minn./Blake HS) went 3-for-4 in the first game with an RBI, while Becky Hilgert (So., Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) had a double.

Augsburg was paced in the first game by Kaiser, who reached base three times and scored two runs. Rachael Ekholm (So., Richfield, Minn.) had a run-scorig triple and scored a run. Emily Miller (Sr., Blaine, Minn.) had a double. Kristi Smith (Sr., Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato HS) took the pitching loss for the Auggies, allowing 10 hits, though just two of the four runs she allowed were earned.

In the second game, the Tommies broke open a close 2-1 game with a five-run seventh inning against Auggie pitcher Ekholm. A run-scoring triple by Moore, a run-scoring single by Ann Cheesbrough (Sr., Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) and a three-run double by Gina Utecht (Fr., Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS) brought home the Tommie runs in the seventh.

Moore had a double and triple in a 2-for-4 second game, while Utecht went 3-for-4. Grudnowski scored two runs for the Tommies.

Erika Skiba (So., Minneapolis, Minn./Roosevelt HS) drove in the lone Auggie run in the fourth, when she hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Ekholm.

Andrea Sweeney (Fr., Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley HS) picked up the pitching win for the Tommies, striking out six while walking just one hitter and allowing five hits. Ekholm took the pitching loss for Augsburg, striking out three.

Augsburg hosts St. Olaf in its last home doubleheader of the season at Minnesota's Bierman Softball Complex on Wednesday (5/3) at 7:15 p.m. St. Thomas hosts Gustavus in an MIAC doubleheader Wednesday at 4 p.m.
