ST. JOSEPH, Minn. (4/8/00) --
Rachael Ekholm (So., Richfield, Minn.) went 3-for-4, hit a solo home run, scored twice and also pitched Augsburg College to a second-game victory, as the Auggies claimed a split of a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball doubleheader with the College of St. Benedict on Saturday afternoon. Host St. Benedict won the first game 9-0 in five innings, and the Auggies claimed the second-game win 5-1.
Augsburg moves to 6-12 overall and 3-1 in the MIAC, while St. Benedict moves to 13-8 overall and 2-1 in the MIAC.
Ekholm's home run led off the fourth inning and put the Auggies on the scoreboard.
Emily Miller (Sr., Blaine, Minn.) and Jennie Lemke (Fr., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) also scored in the frame. Lemke's double the following inning drove in
Kristi Smith (Sr., Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato HS) and Ekholm with the final runs of the game for the Auggies.
Tully Kaiser (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) had two hits and stole a base for the Auggies.
Ekholm struck out two Blazers and allowed just four hits to notch the pitching victory. Mary Welle scored on a single by Carrie Holly in the first inning for the Blazers.
Rosemary Wolf took the pitching loss for St. Benedict, allowing all five runs and eight hits. Angie Erickson finished the game for the Blazers.
Erickson pitched an impressive first game in leading the Blazers to the win, allowing just two hits and walking only one Auggie while striking out six.
Jaclyn Worm's third inning grand-slam home run and a three-run fourth inning gave the Blazers the advantage they needed to end the game after five innings due to the eight-run rule. Welle had two doubles and drove in a run, while Holly also had two hits. St. Benedict notched 10 hits off of Auggie starter Smith.
St. Benedict plays at Hamline in an MIAC doubleheader on Sunday (4/9) at 1 p.m., while Augsburg returns to action with an MIAC doubleheader against Hamline on Tuesday (4/11) at 7:15 p.m. at the University of Minnesota's Bierman Softball Complex.
