Tully Kaiser sets new state stolen base record, Auggies split with St. Olaf!

MINNEAPOLIS (5/3/00) -- Augsburg College's Tully Kaiser (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) set a new Minnesota collegiate record for career stolen bases as the host Auggies split a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball doubleheader with St. Olaf College Wednesday night at the University of Minnesota's Bierman Softball Complex. St. Olaf rallied to win the first game 13-11 in nine innings, and the Auggies won the second game 6-0.

With four stolen bases in the two games, Kaiser broke the Minnesota collegiate (all divisions) softball record for career stolen bases, previously held by St. Thomas' Jessica Boumeester (1996-99). Kaiser now has 108 stolen bases, four better than Boumeester's 104. Kaiser's theft total puts her in sixth place in NCAA Division III history. The record, 150, was set by JoAnn Heckethorn of the College of New Jersey (1991-94). Kaiser also broke her previous single-season school record for stolen bases, as she now has 37 this season.

Kaiser had three hits in the doublehader, scoring three runs, and she reached base seven of the 10 times she was at the plate. Kaiser and Boumeester are the only two Minnesota collegiate softball players ever to record at least 100 career stolen bases, 100 career runs scored and 100 career base hits. Kaiser now has 162 career hits, 129 career runs and 108 career steals. Boumeester finished her career last season with 177 hits, 148 runs and 104 steals.

Kaiser played softball at Augsburg for three seasons (1996-98), before being forced to miss the 1999 season battling Meniere's Disease, an inner-ear disorder that affects equilibrium and motor coordination. She could not do any athletic activity for at least eight months, before being cleared to return to school and to the softball team for the 2000 season. Kaiser has the top four single-season stolen-base performances in school history.

With the second-game win, Augsburg broke a seven game losing streak and improved to 14-22 overall, 10-10 in the MIAC. St. Olaf drops to 8-28 overall, 7-13 in the MIAC.

Augsburg rallied from an early 5-0 deficit in the first game with a six-run fifth inning, sending 12 batters to the plate to take a 8-5 lead. The Auggies led 8-6 going into the top of the seventh inning, but the Oles tied the game with two unearned runs to send the game into extra innings.

A five-run ninth inning, punctuated by a three-run triple by Carrie Cooley (So., Villard, Minn./Minnewaska Area HS), proved to be the difference in the win for the Oles. Augsburg scored three runs in the ninth, two on a double by Jennie Lemke (Fr., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS), but the Auggies could score no more.

Cooley led the Oles with three hits in five at bats, scoring three times and driving in four runs. Christina Moses (Jr., New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) went 2-for-5, with a two-run triple and a run-scoring single. She also scored twice. Kelly Frederick (Fr., Woodland, Minn./Breck HS) also had a run-scoring double. She went 2-for-5 with two RBI.

Emily Miller (Sr., Blaine, Minn.) went 4-for-6 at the plate to lead the Auggis, including a double. Rachael Ekholm (So., Richfield, Minn.) went 3-for-5, driving in one run and scoring three. Kristi Smith (Sr., Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato HS) went 2-for-5, driving in four runs.

Grete Christenson (So., Springfield, Va./Robert E. Lee HS), who pitched both complete games for the Oles, struck out picked up the pitching win, striking out two in the first game. Ekholm took the loss, despite striking out six.

Smith scored her second career shutout to pick up the second victory for the Auggies, striking out one while surrendering two walks and just six hits.

Meanwhile, her teammates provided solid run support with a four-run first inning, keyed by a run-scoring triple by Ekholm. Smith helped her own cause with a 2-for-3 evening with a double, driving in two runs and scoring one. Brenda Selander (Jr., Oakdale, Minn./Tartan HS) scored twice for the Auggies.

Christenson took the pitching loss, collecting one strikeout. Maren Sunde (Sr., St. James, Minn.) had a triple and Mosess had a double to lead the Oles.

Augsburg closes its season with an MIAC doubleheader at Hamline on Saturday (5/6). St. Olaf hosts Carleton in a doubleheader in Northfield, Minn., on Saturday. Both doubleheaders start at 1 p.m.
