Rachael Ekholm (So., Richfield, Minn.) pitched a four-hit shutout in the first game, while Venda Porter (So., Port Townsend, Wash.) went 3-for-4 with three RBI and a double in the second game, as Augsburg College and Hamline University split a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Hamline. Augsburg won the first game 2-0, and Hamline claimed the second contest 6-1.
Augsburg finishes its season at 15-23 overall, 11-11 in the MIAC. Hamline finishes its season 7-23 overall, 6-16 in the MIAC.
Ekholm struck out three Pipers in the first game while allowing just one walk and four hits to notch her second shutout of the season. She finished the year with 96 strikeouts, the second-highest single-season total in school history. The record, 100, was set by Dorothy Holmes McIntyre in 1980. At the plate, Ekholm also went 2-for-3 with a run-scoring double.
Jessica Norman (Jr., Lakeville, Minn.) went 2-for-2 with an RBI at the plate for Augsburg, while
Kristi Smith (Sr., Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato HS) and
Erika Skiba (So., Minneapolis, Minn./Roosevelt HS) added a double.
Katie Buck (Fr., West St. Paul, Minn.) took the loss for the Pipers, striking out three while walking four Auggies.
In the second contest, Porter led Hamline's 15-hit attack with three hits, including a double, driving in three runs. Jen McDowell (So., Olivia, Minn.) went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Dena Bonkoski (So., St. Croix Falls, Wis.), Karla Kluzak (Fr., Rosemount, Minn.), Jessica Stoeing (Jr., St. Paul, Minn.) and Emily Deuth (Fr., Northfield, Minn.) also had two hits apiece. Deuth scored twice and Beth Gessler (Jr., Jordan, Minn.) added a double.
Smith took the pitching loss for the Auggies, striking out one but allowing all 15 hits and five earned runs. Carie Mackey (Jr., Wyoming, Minn.) scored the win for the Pipers, striking out five and allowing two walks and seven hits.
Smith led the way at the plate for the Auggies, with a 2-for-4 second game and her second double of the afternoon. Smith finished her career with 32 doubles, the second-highest total in school history. Kristi Ockuly had 34 doubles from 1992-95. Ekholm and
Emily Miller (Sr., Blaine, Minn.) also had doubles for the Auggies.
Tully Kaiser (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) finishe her brilliant career with the Auggies with two hits and a run scored in the doubleheader. Minnesota's all-time collegiate (all divisions) record-holder for career stolen bases with 108 (sixth place in NCAA Division III history), Kaiser also finished her career with Augsburg's career records for runs scored (132) and base hits (164). She is just the second player in Minnesota softball history (Jessica Boumeester of St. Thomas was the other) to record at least 100 career stolen bases, 100 career runs scored and 100 career base hits.
