STORY FROM ST. THOMAS SPORTS INFORMATION
ST. PAUL, Minn. (4/18/01) -- The University of St. Thomas softball team remained in a first-place Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tie with St. Mary's and ran its winning streak to nine with Wednesday's 8-0, 3-0 home-field sweep of Augsburg College.

The Toms (22-6 overall, 9-1 MIAC), ranked 24th nationally in this week's NFCA Division III ratings, got shutouts from senior Casey Curson (five innings) and soph Stacy Tamble. Augsburg dropped to 9-13 overall and 2-6 in the conference.

St. Mary's swept Carleton Wednesday at home to improve to 9-1 in the MIAC.

Curson allowed five hits and four walks while striking out four in the five-inning, game-one victory. Eight different Toms had a hit, and Sarah Grudnowski, Curson and Becky Hilgert each scored twice and had a hit and a walk.

In game two, Tamble fanned eight and tossed a three-hit shutout with no walks. She's now 13-1 with an 0.23 ERA in 14 career games vs. conference opponents. Heather Martin broke a scoreless tie with a two-run double in the fourth inning. Avery Heidenreich, who was 3-for-3 in game two, added an insurance run in the sixth as she singled, stole second, took third on an error, and scored on Hilgert's sacrifice fly.

The Auggies threatened in the seventh with a leadoff bunt single by Brenda Selander and Rachael Ekholm's single. But Tamble set down the next three Auggies to complete the shutout.

The Toms host St. Olaf Saturday (1 p.m.) in another MIAC twinbill. Augsburg hosts St. Benedict on Thursday (4/19) at 5 p.m. at Anderson-Nelson Field in a rescheduled MIAC doubleheader.
