MINNEAPOLIS (4/28/01) -- In a doubleheader that featured just 11 hits all afternoon and four solid complete-game pitching performances, Augsburg College and Carleton College split 1-0 decisions in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Augsburg's Anderson-Nelson Field.

Augsburg won the first contest 1-0, while Carleton won the second contest by the same score. Augsburg moved to 12-18 overall and 5-11 in the MIAC, while Carleton moved to 10-14 overall and 7-9 in league play.

Rachael Ekholm (Jr., Richfield, Minn.) pitched two complete-game performances for the Auggies. Andrea Carroll (So., Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) pitched the first game for the Knights, striking out six while allowing just two hits. Fauna Smith (Sr., Willits, Calif.) pitched a two-hit victory in the second game for Carleton. Neither of the runs scored were earned.

In the sixth inning of the first game, Ekholm scored on a two-error play off the bat of Melissa Lee (Fr., Cannon Falls, Minn./Randolph HS) to give the Auggies the win. Lee's grounder got past the second baseman, and a subsequent throw to home to get Ekholm was wide of the plate, allowing Ekholm to score.

Carleton claimed the second-game victory with a seventh-inning rally. Cecily Schrader (So., Edina, Minn.) led off the inning with a double to right center, was advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Alyssa Honnette (Fr., Jackson, Minn./Jackson County Central HS), and came home on a passed ball.

Carleton had a couple of chances to score in the first game, with runners in scoring position twice, once as far as third base in the third inning. The same was true for the Auggies in the second game, as they stranded two runners in the third and fifth innings, and had a runner stranded on third in the sixth.

Augsburg was limited to two hits in each game, but each featured a double, one from Ekholm in the first contest and one from Andrea Spiess (So., South St. Paul, Minn./St. Bernard's HS) in the second game.

Carleton had four hits in the first game and three in the second, including Schrader's double.

Augsburg returns to MIAC action on Monday (4/30) at 4 p.m., playing at St. Catherine in a rescheduled game. Carleton plays at St. Benedict on Sunday (4/29) at 1 p.m.
