ST. JOSEPH, Minn. (4/23/02) -- Ani Jordan threw a one-hit shutout in the first game, and Lindsey Peterson and Michaela Potts combined for a two-hit shutout in the second game, as the College of St. Benedict swept Augsburg College 1-0 and 3-0 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball doubleheader Tuesday at St. Benedict.
Jordan, who earned MIAC Pitcher of the Week honors last week, threw her fourth shutout in a row as part of the sweep, helping St. Benecit improve to 18-4-1 overall and 8-1 in the MIAC. Augsburg droped to 7-17-1 overall, 3-11 in MIAC play.
Rachael Ekholm (Sr., Richfield, Minn.) got the lone hit off of Jordan in the game, a single. Augsburg had just two baserunners, and both were stranded.
Jordan struck out 11 of the 23 batters she faced in the game. Ekholm, pitching for Augsburg, took the loss despite striking out six.
Peterson picked up where Jordan left off with a solid second-game performance, striking out three in six innnings of work and allowing just two hits, a double by
Melissa Lee (So., Cannon Falls, Minn./Randolph HS) and a single by
Kristen Lideen (So., Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS). Potts struck out one in her inning of work to claim the save.
Ekholm pitched the first three innings, striking out one and allowing just one hit.
Mindy Evers (Sr., Comfrey, Minn.) pitched the final three innings, allowing two hits and one walk with one strikeout. None of the three runs scored against Evers in the final three innings were earned, as the Auggies had two errors and a passed ball.
Jaclyn Worm had a triple for St. Benedict.
Augsburg is scheduled to return to action on Thursday (4/25) with a 4 p.m. MIAC doubleheader at St. Olaf. St. Benedict hosts Macalester on Thursday at 4 p.m.
