Jessie Bowman (Fr., St. Louis Park, Minn.) had two doubles and scored a run in the first game, and
Christine Matthews (So., Robbinsdale, Minn./Robbinsdale Cooper HS) hit a two-run triple in the second game, providing the margin of victory for Augsburg College in a split of two games Wednesday morning at the Rebel Spring Games softball tournament.
In the firs game, Augsburg could not rally in a 9-6 loss to William Paterson University (N.J.), and in the second game, Matthews' triple in the sixth inning gave Augsburg a 2-0 win over Wooster College (Ohio) in the second game. Augsburg is now 2-6 on the season.
Augsburg fell behind early in the game against William Paterson, as the New Jersey squad scored five runs in the top of the first inning. But in the bottom of the frame, Augsburg sent eight players to the plate and had seven hits to score four runs. Augsburg kept the game close until the sixth inning, when William Paterson scored three runs to clinch the win.
Bowman had two doubles in her four at-bats, scoring a run.
Kristen Lideen (Jr., Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) went 2-for-4 with a double and run scored, while
Jennie LaManna (Sr., South St. Paul, Minn.) also went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Melissa Lee (Jr., Cannon Falls, Minn./Randolph HS) drove in two runs and scored another.
Augsburg had 11 hits in the game, but stranded nine runners on base in the game.
Cassie Hoss (Fr., Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park HS), making her first collegiate pitching start, pitched a complete game, giving up 13 hits and five walks with just one strikeout.
The second game became a pitching duel between Augsburg's
Shelley Harris (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) and Wooster's Natalie Barone. Harris struck out two and allowed just four hits and a walk, while Barone had three strikeouts and allowed just three Auggie hits.
In the fifth inning, Wooster took the lead, when Abby Petrullo doubled and scored on a single by Kirsten Lucas. In the top of the sixth, Lideen and
Sam Kronschnabel (Sr., St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) hit consecutive singles, and came across on a two-run triple by Matthews.
Augsburg closes its play in the Rebel Spring Games on Thursday (3/20), with a game against Calvin (Mich.) at 9:30 a.m. and a game against Millikin (Ill.) at 1:10 p.m.
