MINNEAPOLIS (4/12/03) -- Hanni Lohmann (Jr., Lake Elmo, Minn./Stillwater HS) pitched a three-hit, eight-inning shutout in the first game, and Jennifer Gonerka (Sr., St. Paul, Minn./Harding HS) capped the doubleheader with an eight-strikeout shutout in the second game, giving St. Mary's University a sweep of host Augsburg College in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball play Saturday at Edor Nelson Field.

St. Mary's won the first game 1-0 in eight innings and the second game 2-0 to improve to 12-6 overall, 7-1 in MIAC play. Augsburg drops to 4-20 overall and 1-9 in MIAC play. The Auggies, who played in their seventh extra-inning game of the season in the first contest, saw its losing streak extended to five straight games. Augsburg has now lost 12 of its last 13 contests.

Both games turned into pitching duels, the first game between Lohmann and Augsburg's Cassie Hoss (Fr., Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park HS), and the second game between Gonerka and Augsburg's Shelley Harris (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS).

Lohmann struck out four Auggies while not allowing a walk and surrendering just three hits -- all singles -- in the first game. Meanwhile, Hoss was nearly as effective, striking out two while walking three and allowing just four hits -- also, all singles.

The Cardinals took the first game in the eighth inning, when Krista Conway (So., Mendota Heights, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) walked, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on a single by Amy Langer (Jr., Savage, Minn./Jordan HS).

Amy Edge (So., Mineral Point, Wis.) went 2-for-3 in the first game for St. Mary's, while Jennifer Lemke (Sr., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) had two of Augsburg's three hits, going 2-for-3.

In the second game, the pitching duel was decided on two unearned runs in the first three innings. Gonerka struck out eight while not allowing a walk and giving up seven hits. Harris struck out one, walked one and allowed seven hits.

St. Mary's scored its first run in the second inning, when Jackie Huegel (Sr., Alta Vista, Iowa/New Hampton HS) singled, advanced on a passed ball and scored on a two-out single by Jenny Schipp (Fr., North St. Paul, Minn.).

In the third, Langer doubled to center, then moved to third on a wild pitch and scored with two outs when Huegel reached base on a throwing error.

Melissa Lee (Jr., Cannon Falls, Minn./Randolph HS) went 2-for-3 with two doubles, while Kristen Lideen (Jr., Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) went 3-for-3 with a double, but neither could score for the Auggies.

Meanwhile, Langer went 3-for-4 with a double and run scored, and Edge also had a double for the Cardinals.

Both teams return to MIAC action on Monday (4/14), with Augsburg hosting Bethel at 5 p.m., while St. Mary's hosts Carleton at 4 p.m.
