ST. PETER, Minn. (4/2/03) -- Molly Biehn (Jr., Mankato, Minn.) threw a two-hit, five-inning shutout in the first game, and Sara Medved (Jr., Blaine, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) struck out five in 5.2 innings of work Wednesday, leading Gustavus Adolphus College to a sweep of visiting Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball doubleheader at Gustie Field.
Gustavus won the first game 9-0 in five innings, and took the second game 5-1 to improve to 5-8 overall. Augsburg saw its losing streak move to five straight games in falling to 3-13 overall. It was the first MIAC action for both teams this season.
Biehn had four strukeouts and did not walk a batter, facing just 16 batters, one over the minimum, in her five innings of work. The game was shortened due to the eight-run rule after five innings.
Augsburg's lone hits, both singles, came from
Sam Kronschnabel (Sr., St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) and
Melissa Lee (Jr., Cannon Falls, Minn./Randolph HS) in the fourth inning.
Gustavus scored twice in the first inning, then used a two-run homer by Audrey Lenoch (Fr., Pine Island, Minn.) and an RBI double by Jenny Ebanks (Jr., Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) to produce a four-run third inning. Lenoch had a sacrifice fly to drive in a run in the fourth inning, followed by an RBI double by Jennifer Knutson (Fr., St. Peter, Minn.). Ingrid Olson (Jr., White Bear Lake, Minn.) scored three runs for the Gusties, while Lenoch went 2-for-2 with four RBI.
Augsburg's
Rebecca Peters (Jr., Portage, Wis.) suffered the loss, allowing eight hits and seven earned runs, while walking four.
In the second game, Gustavus built a 3-0 lead after three innings, and Augsburg could not bring runners across, stranding nine runners on base, including leaving the bases loaded in the sixth inning.
Olson had a triple and scored in the first for the Gusties, while Kristen Kunz (Fr., Esko, Minn.) doubled and scored on a suicide squeeze bunt by Sarah Holm (Sr., Charles City, Iowa) in the second. A two-run double by Biehn put the final runs on the board for the Gusties in the fifth. Christina Diller (Sr., Menomonie, Wis.) and Olson scored two runs apiece for Gustavus.
Augsburg's lone run came in the fourth inning, when
Christine Matthews (So., Robbinsdale, Minn./Cooper HS) doubled home
Jennie LaManna (Sr., South St. Paul, Minn.).
Lee went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double for the Auggies, while Matthews went 2-for-2 with an RBI.
Pitcher
Shelley Harris (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) allowed just five hits, but walked two and allowed two runs.
Both teams return to MIAC action on Saturday (3/5) at 3 p.m., with Augsburg playing at Hamline and Gustavus hosting Macalester. Gustavus hosts Buena Vista (Iowa) in a nonconference doubleheader on Thursday (3/3) at 3 p.m.
