ST. PAUL, Minn. (4/26/03) -- Ana Fernandez pitched 13.2 innings to pick up two victories for the College of St. Catherine, as the Wildcats scored a sweep of a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball doubleheader over Augsburg College on Saturday afternoon at St. Catherine.

The Wildcats won the first game 2-0 and the second game 8-5 to improve to 6-20 overall, 5-13 in MIAC play. Augsburg drops to 6-28 overall and 3-17 in MIAC play. Twenty of Augsburg's 28 losses have been by three runs or less. Augsburg has won just three games in its last 23 contests.

In the first game, St. Catherine scored two unearned runs in the first inning, all the runs it would need. After a fielding error and a wild pitch, two runs scored. Auggie pitcher Shelley Harris (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) allowed just five hits, all singles.

Meanwhile, Augsburg was limited to just one hit against Fernandez -- a single by Kristen Lideen (Jr., Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) in the sixth inning.

St. Catherine scored three runs in the first inning of the second game to take a lead it would never relinquish. A two-run single by Rita Pomeroy and a sacrifice fly by Jennifer Korba brought in runs in the second, and two errors brought home two runs in the third.

Augsburg had plated a single run in the first, when Jessie Bowman (Fr.) hit a run-scoring single. In the fourth, Augsburg scored two runs, as Cassie Hoss (Fr., Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park HS) doubled to drive in two runs. The Auggies cut the lead to 5-4 in the top of the fifth, when Bowman drove in her second run of the game on a single.

But St. Catherine scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to clinch the win. A key hit was a run-scoring double by Kelly Gulden.

Augsburg drove in a run on a single by Christine Mathews (So., Robbinsdale, Minn./Cooper HS) in the top of the seventh and had the bases loaded with two outs. But a fly out to the infield ended the game.

Augsburg managed 13 hits in the second game, but stranded nine on base. Lideen, Bowman and Melynda Kleewein (So., Anchorage, Alaska/Dimond HS) had two hits apiece in the game.

Harris struck out two and allowed just five hits, with only three of the eight runs against her being earned. Fernandez struck out two to claim the victory.

St. Catherine hosts Northwestern-Roseville in a nonconference doubleheader on Monday (4/28) at 4 p.m. Augsburg finishes its season on Friday (5/2) at 4 p.m., with an MIAC contest at Carleton.
