KISSIMMEE, Fla. (3/14/04) --
Melissa Lee (Sr., Cannon Falls, Minn./Randolph HS) went 3-for-7 at the plate with two runs scored and a double, leading the Augsburg College softball team in its season-opening split of two games at the Rebel Spring Games on Sunday, falling 3-1 to Concordia University-Wisconsin and winning 6-0 over Marian College (Wis.).
While the Auggies split their two games, they suffered a big loss in the first game, as All-American shortstop
Kristen Lideen (Sr., Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) was sidelined with a leg injury in the first game. On a play at second base, a Concordia runner and shortstop Lideen collided, with the cleats of the Concordia runner plunging into Lideen's thigh. Head coach Carol Enke said that Lideen was taken to a hospital via ambulance and had to have 13 stitches in her thigh to treat the injury. Lideen did not play in the second game against Marian.
Lee went 2-for-4 at the plate in the first game with a double, scoring a run.
Emily Crook (So., Duluth, Minn./Duluth Marshall HS) went 2-for-3, and
Lisa Uehling (Fr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) had the other Auggie hit. However, Augsburg stranded nine runners on base in the loss.
Shelley Harris (So., Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) pitched for the Auggies, striking out two while walking three and allowing four hits. Just one of the three runs against her was earned in the loss, as Augsburg committed three errors.
In the second game, Augsburg scored six runs in the first four innings and claimed the shutout win, with
Julia Grovum (So., Cottage Grove, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) making her collegiate pitching debut for the Auggies. She struck out three and walked three, allowing just four hits in a complete-game effort.
Augsburg scored its six runs on just three hits, as the Auggies took advantage of nine walks and three Marian errors. Just two of the six runs charged against the Marian pitcher, Julia Skenandore, were earned. Lee,
Becky Ruckel (Jr., Andover, Minn./Anoka HS) and
Kati Tweeten (Fr., Spring Grove, Minn.) had singles for the Auggies. ruckel reached base all four times she was at the plate, walking three times in addition to her hit. Ruckel and
Audra Thimmesch-Gill (So., St. Paul, Minn./Central HS) scored twice for the Auggies.
Augsburg returns to action in the Rebel Spring Games on Monday (3/15), facing Wisconsin-River Falls at 8 a.m. and Carthage (Wis.) at 10 a.m.
