MINNEAPOLIS (4/17/04) -- Ashley Decker (Fr., Plainview, Minn.) threw a two-hit shutout victory for the College of St. Catherine in the first game, while
Shelley Harris (So., Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) pitched a three-hit shutout and provided the game-winning score for Augsburg College in the second game, as the teams split a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.
St. Catherine won the first game 9-0, while Augsburg won the second game 1-0. Augsburg is now 9-19 overall and 5-9 in MIAC play, while St. Catherine is now 6-19 overall, 2-12 in MIAC play.
Harris struck out two while walking one and allowing just four Wildcat baserunners in the second game. However, Augsburg's offense also struggled against St. Catherine pitcher Decker, who allowed just five hits while striking out two.
But in the bottom of the seventh inning, Augsburg scored the victory on the bat of Harris, who stroked a leadoff double to the left-center gap. The next batter,
Kati Tweeten (Fr., Spring Grove, Minn.), hit a double to center field to plate Harris with the game-winning run.
Julia Grovum (So., Cottage Grove, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) had a triple for the Auggies in the second game.
In the first game, St. Catherine's Decker was the story, striking out two while only allowing Augsburg two hits and two walks.
Her offense provided a big scoring punch late in the game, scoring all nine runs in the final four innings. Ten Wildcats came to the plate in the fourth inning, as the visitors pounded out five hits and took advantage of two errors to score five runs. Three more runs came across in the fifth, as the Wildcats sent seven batters to the plate and notched three hits, including consecutive run-scoring doubles by Randi Wuensch (Fr., Brooklyn Center, Minn.) and Kelly Walentiny (Fr., Richfield, Minn.). St. Catherine completed the scoring in the seventh, getting two runs on a single by Annie Byrne (Fr., Mendota Heights, Minn.).
Angie Johnson (Fr., Wadena, Minn.) went 3-for-4, scoring twice, while Wuensch scored three runs in going 3-for-4. Walentiny went 2-for-4, scorign twice and driving in two runs, and Jessica Albrecht (Sr., Monticello, Minn.) went 2-for-4.
Both teams return to MIAC doubleheader action on Sunday (4/18) at 1 p.m., with Augsburg playing at St. Benedict and St. Catherine hosting Macalester.
