MINNEAPOLIS (4/5/04) -- Angela Vedders (So., Foreston, Minn.) struck out eight in a 10-inning effort in the first game, and Julie Berthiaume (Sr., St. Paul, Minn.) picked up her first shutout of the season with a three-strikeout, five-hit victory in the second game, as Bethel College swept host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball doubleheader Monday evening at Edor Nelson Field.
Bethel rallied to win the first game 6-3 in 10 innings and won the second game 7-0 to improve to 6-15 overall, 3-3 in MIAC play. Augsburg drops to 6-14 overall, 2-4 in MIAC play, dropping its fourth game in a row.
In the first game, Augsburg took a 1-0 lead in the third inning, on a RBI groundout by
Melissa Lee (Sr., Cannon Falls, Minn./Randolph HS), scoring
Trisha Pederson (Sr., Cloquet, Minn./Proctor HS).
Pitcher
Shelley Harris (So., Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) carried a shutout into the seventh inning, ending up striking out six in a complete-game effort, throwing 160 pitches in 10 innings. With two outs in the seventh and Bethel down to its last strike with a runner at second, Rachel Grams (Jr., Glencoe, Minn.) hit a single to center field, driving in Lexi Giesler (Jr., Grand Rapids, Minn.) to tie the game and force extra innings.
Both teams scored a single run in the ninth inning, but in the 10th inning, Bethel took advantage of two Augsburg errors and had three hits, sending nine batters to the plate and scoring four runs. Augsburg could manage just one run in the bottom of the frame to end the game. Five of the six runs charged to Harris were unearned, including all four runs in the 10th.
Vedders threw 141 pitches for the victory for the Royals, striking out eight while walking one and allowing 12 hits. Augsburg stranded 10 runners on base, while Bethel stranded 13 runners on the basepaths.
Becky Foskett (Sr., Prior Lake, Minn.) went 2-for-5 for Bethel, including a double. Lindsay Norman (Jr., Prior Lake, Minn.) and Grams also had two hits apiece, each driving in a run.
Augsburg was paced by
Kristen Lideen (Sr., Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS), who went 4-for-5 for Augsburg, driving in a run. Harris,
Kati Tweeten (Fr., Spring Grove, Minn.) and
Julia Grovum (So., Cottage Grove, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) had two hits apiece for the Auggies.
Bethel took an early 1-0 lead in the second game on a fielding error, then broke the game open with a four-run fourth inning, keyed by an RBI double by Vedders. Bethel scored twice more in the fifth to complete the scoring.
Meghan Nelson (So., Mendota Heights, Minn.) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored to lead the Royals, who had six hits off of Augsburg pitcher Grovum. Lee had two hits to lead the Auggies.
Both teams return to MIAC play with doubleheaders on Wednesday (4/7). Augsburg hosts Carleton at 5 p.m., while Bethel plays at St. Benedict at 4 p.m.
