MINNEAPOLIS (4/7/04) -- Kari Christianson (So., Twin Valley, Minn./Norman County East HS) went 6-for-7 at the plate, scoring five runs and driving in four, leading Carleton College to a doubleheader sweep of host Augsburg College in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball action on Wednesday evening at Edor Nelson Field.
Carleton claimed the sweep in two five-inning contests, 12-2 in the first game and 14-2 in the second, to improve to 8-14 overall, 4-4 in MIAC play. Carleton has now won its last four games in a row. Meanwhile, Augsburg drops to 6-16 overall, 2-6 in MIAC play, as its losing streak is now at six straight games.
One big inning was the order of the day for Carleton in each game. In the first game, Carleton sent 15 batters to the plate and scored 11 runs in the decisive fifth inning. In the second game, Carleton sent 14 batters to the plate in the third inning and scored nine runs on just two hits, taking advantage of two errors, two hit batters and four walks, including three with the bases loaded.
Christianson went 3-for-4 with three RBI, a double and two runs scored in the first game, then went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI double in the second game.
Vickie Gunderson (Jr., Elk Grove Village, Ill./Elk Grove HS) went 2-for-4 in the first game with a two-run home run in the fifth inning. She drove in three runs in the first game. Abby Kalland (Sr., Northfield, Minn.) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, and Steph Lee (Sr., Beaverton, Ore.) went 2-for-2, with a triple and double, driving in three runs and scoring twice.
In the second game, Kalland scored three runs, while Lee scored twice. Leslie Barry (Jr., Louisville, Ohio) went 2-for-2 with a run scored and RBI, while Carina Ellis (Fr., Mahtomedi, Minn.) drove in two runs. Elise Johnson (Fr., Grantsburg, Wis.) had a three-run double in the fifth inning. Carleton managed just eight hits in the second game, but took advantage of nine walks and three Augsburg errors.
Alyssa Honette (Sr., Jackson, Minn./Jackson County Central HS) pitched a four-hitter in the first game for the victory, while Caitlyn Cornell (So., Mankato, Minn./East HS) picked up the pitching win in the second game, allowing just two hits and two unearned runs.
Augsburg was limited to just four hits in the first game and two in the second game.
Kristen Lideen (Sr., Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) had a hit in each contest, scoring one run.
Melissa Lee (Sr., Cannon Falls, Minn./Randolph HS) had a triple and scored a run in the first game.
Shelley Harris (So., Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) took the pitching loss for the Auggies in the first game, while
Julia Grovum (So., Cottage Grove, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) took the loss in the second game.
Both teams return to MIAC play with doubleheaders on Monday (4/12) at 4 p.m., with Carleton hosting St. Olaf and Augsburg hosting Concordia-Moorhead.
