Women's Swimming 1/21/05 -- Minnesota-Morris 104, Augsburg 95
ST. PAUL, Minn. (1/21/05) -- Robin Moe and Megan McLennen claimed two individual victories each for the University of Minnesota-Morris women's swimming team, while
Kasi Clauson (So., Kansas, Okla./Cookson Hills Christian HS) and
Dani Matzke (Fr., Faribault, Minn.) scored two victories for Augsburg College, as Minnesota-Morris claimed a 104-95 nonconference dual-meet victory over the host Auggies on Friday night at the College of St. Catherine's Butler Center pool.
Moe claimed victories in the 200-yard freestyle (2:26.66) and the 100-yard freestyle (1:09.11), while McLennen scored wins in the 200-yard individual medley (2:39.32) and 100-yard backstroke (1:15.37) for the Cougars.
The Cougars and Auggies were even in the swimming events, with Morris winning four events and a relay and Augsburg winning five events and a relay.
However, Morris had three divers compete, while Augsburg has not yet developed a diving program in just its second year of its varsity swimming program. Therefore, the 16 points Morris earned from its divers gave the visitors the victory. Lauren Trapp won the diving with a 161.93 score, while Bree McCanon was second with 160.65 and Tara Schmidt was third with 160.28.
For Augsburg, Matzke won the 1,000-yard freestyle in a school record 12:42.05, while also winning the 500-yard freestyle in 6:15.96. Clauson broke her old school record of 1:06.25 in the 100-yard butterfly, setting a new mark in 1:05.26. She also won the 100-yard breaststroke in a season-best 1:14.75.
Augsburg's 200-yard medley relay squad of
Leah Haan (Fr., Burnsville, Minn./Minnehaha Academy HS),
Trudy Pommerening (Fr., Bemidji, Minn.), Clauson and Matzke set a new school record by more than two seconds in the 200-yard medley relay, winning in 2:05.54. The old mark of 2:07.67 was set by the quartet earlier this year.
Joann Anderson (Jr., Eagan, Minn./Burnsville HS) won the 50-yard freestyle (29.43) for the Auggies, while finishing second in the 100-yard freestyle (1:09.13), just two-hundredths of a second behind Morris' Moe.
Haan set a new personal best by nearly eight seconds in the 200-yard individual medley (2:39.86), while
Lindsey Persons (So., Wayzata, Minn./Orono HS) set a new personal best for her second straight meet in the 50-yard freestyle (30.12).
Both teams return to action on Saturday (1/22) at the Butler Center pool for the St. Catherine Invitational. Swimming action begins at 1 p.m. It is Augsburg's final regular-season meet before the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships Feb. 17-19.
