BOXSCORE
NORTHFIELD, Minn. (11/12/05) -- Andrew Schmiesing (So., Stillwater, Minn.) caught eight passes for 207 yards and three touchdowns, and Jason Wilsey (Sr., Columbia Heights, Minn.) threw for 381 yards and five scores, as St. Olaf College claimed a 49-0 victory over visiting Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game Saturday afternoon at Manitou Field.
St. Olaf poured out 686 yards of total offense on 75 plays, the most yardage gained against Augsburg this season, in finishing the regular season 8-2 overall, 6-2 in MIAC play. The win marks the first time St. Olaf has won eight games in a single season since 1978.
Augsburg finishes its season 1-9 overall, 1-7 in MIAC play.
St. Olaf scored on its first four drives of the game to build a 28-0 first-quarter lead, an advantage expanded to 35-0 at halftime. Wilsey set a single-season school record for passing yardage, finishing with 2,591 yards this year and 26 touchdowns.
Augsburg, which gained 301 yards of total offense, was paced by 125 receiving yards by
Andrew Neumann (Jr., Somerset, Wis.) on 13 catches.
David Lange (So., Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins HS), making his third collegiate start, threw for 191 yards on 20-of-43 passing with two interceptions.
Wilsey opened the scoring with a 12-yard pass to Horace Gant (So., Pensacola, Fla./Pine Forest HS) with 9:29 left in the first quarter. After Augsburg punted on its next drive, the Oles struck quickly, as Wilsey found Schmiesing over the middle for a 72-yard scoring strike with 7:55 left. On the Oles' next drive, the duo struck again, as a 10-yard scoring pass completed a six-play, 64-yard drive with 4:21 left in the first quarter.
St. Olaf went 80 yards in just three plays on its next drive, taking advantage of a 40-yard completion from Wilsey to Preston St. John (So., Farmington, Minn.) and two penalties against Augsburg, setting up a 15-yard scoring pass from Wilsey to Chris Feehan (Jr., Corcoran, Minn./Rockford HS), to lead 28-0.
An interception by John Davis (Sr., Edina, Minn.) -- one of his two pickoffs on the day -- set up St. Olaf's next score, on a one-yard plunge by defensive lineman Andre Conner (Sr., Pensacola, Fla./Pine Forest HS) with 5:59 left in the first half.
St. Olaf scored twice more in the third quarter to complete the scoring. Schmiesing caught his third touchdown pass of the game at the 6:53 mark of the third quarter on a fade pattern to the far corner of the end zone from Wilsey, covering nine yards. Reserve quarterback Matt Penz (So., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Jay Higgins (So., Lakeland, Minn./Stillwater HS) at the 3:52 mark of the frame.
Augsburg had several chances to score, but could not put the ball in the end zone as St. Olaf claimed its first shutout victory since the 2002 season. A 58-yard kickoff return by
Ricky Schreier (Jr., Maplewood, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) late in the second quarter put the ball at the St. Olaf 30-yard line, but a seven-play drive stalled at the St. Olaf 15.
Augsburg had a 13-play, 57-yard drive stalled at the St. Olaf 19-yard line early in the third quarter, and two field-goal attempts were missed in the fourth quarter, each ending 11-play Auggie drives.

MATSON NAMED TO D3FOOTBALL.COM TEAM OF THE WEEK: Augsburg linebacker

Matson recorded a career-high 28 total tackles (nine solo) and had a key forced fumble in the closing minutes, stopping a potential Bethel scoring rush at the Augsburg 1-yard line with 2:31 remaining.
This is the latest honor for Matson, who was named the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week and Don Hansen's Football Gazette National Defensive Co-Player of the Week after recording 22 tackles in Augsburg's victory over Hamline on Oct. 15.
The 28-tackle performance against Bethel marked the third time in the last four weeks that Matson has recorded 22 tackles or more in a game. He had 22 tackles against Hamline, as well as 22 tackles against Concordia on Oct. 29.
He currently has a team- and MIAC-leading 142 tackles this season (62 solo). His average of 15.8 tackles per game ranks second-best nationally among Division III defenders, just one-tenth of a point behind national leader Bryan Meuse of Nichols (Mass.), who has a 15.9 average. Matson also ranks 12th-best nationally in solo tackles per game (6.9).
LINEBACKER KROGER ALSO HAVING CAREER SEASON: Not to be overlooked in the tackling category has been the career performance of Auggie linebacker
Taylor Kroger (Sr., Cottonwood, Minn/Lakeview HS), who has 120 tackles (43 solo) on the season, third in the MIAC in overall tackles per game (13.3). His per-game average of 13.3 is currently sixth-best nationally among Division III defenders.
Against Bethel, he had his second career high in tackles of the season, with 22 (four solo), along with a pass breakup and recovery of Matson's forced fumble late in the fourth quarter.
SCHLIEMAN AMONG NATION'S LEADERS IN PUNTING: Augsburg's
Nick Schlieman (Sr., Burnsville, Minn.) had six punts for a 38.0-yard average against Bethel on Friday. So far this season, he is averaging 41.6 yards per punt (overall) with 50 tries this season, currently ranked ninth in the Division III national rankings in the punting category. Currently, Hunter Hamrick of Mary Hardin-Baylor (Texas) is ranked No. 1 nationally with a 43.5 average (32 punts). There are 10 punters in Division III with averages of 41.0 or better.
The only punter in the MIAC to average 38 or more yards per punt in each of the last three seasons, Schlieman currently has a career punting average of 40.1 (8,661 yards, 216 punts). In his career, Schlieman has 77 punts of 40-49 yards, 27 punts of 50-59 yards and seven punts of 60-plus yards. He's placed 58 punts inside the opponent 20-yard line, has forced 15 fair catches and 18 touchbacks, against just four blocked punts. Among his 50 punts this season, Schlieman has 26 punts of 40-49 yards, along with punts of 50, 55, 58 and 68 yards. He's placed 14 punts inside the 20 this year.
Schlieman is also Augsburg's primary placekicker. He has connected on 6-of-12 field goals this season, including a 46-yarder, and is 9-of-10 on extra points. He tied the school record for longest field goal with a 49-yarder in last year's season finale against St. Olaf.

Ricky Schreier (Jr., Maplewood, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS), a 36-yarder in the second quarter and a 3-yarder in the fourth quarter. So far this season, Schreier ranks second in the MIAC in overall receptions per game (5.33) and third in oveall receiving yards per game (79.8). He also ranks fifth in the MIAC in overall all-purpose yards per game (124.1).
AUGSBURG'S TOUGH SCHEDULE IN 2005: Five of the 10 teams Augsburg has faced this season have been ranked nationally at least once during this season by one of the major Division III polls. St. Olaf was ranked as high as 29th in the Football Gazette Division III national poll, but is now unranked. Concordia-Moorhead, which beat Augsburg 48-14 on Oct. 29, was ranked No. 13 in the D3football.com Division III national poll entering the game and is now ranked No. 10. St. John's was ranked No. 5 in all three major Division III national polls entering its 56-16 win over Augsburg on Oct. 22, but is now No. 3 in both the D3football.com national poll and the Football Gazette national poll.
Augsburg opened the season with a 29-26 loss at Wartburg (Iowa), the defending Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champions which entered the season ranked No. 24 by D3football.com. The Knights are now unranked, but are still 6-3 on the season and in third place in the IIAC. And North Central (Ill.), Augsburg's second opponent (64-25 NCC win on Sept. 17), is 8-1 and ranked No. 15 by D3football.com, after being ranked as high as No. 11 nationally.

SCOUTING THE AUGGIES: Phil Porta rushed 44 times for a school-record 289 yards, scoring a touchdown to help Bethel to a 17-14 victory over host Augsburg on Friday afternoon at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. Porta led a Bethel attack that accumulated 375 rushing yards and 494 yards of total offense on 91 plays. The Royals held Augsburg to just 213 yards of total offense on 56 plays, including just 49 yards on the ground. Bethel controlled the ball for 37:21, compared to just 22:39 for Augsburg.
Augsburg was paced by career-highs of 28 tackles (nine solo) by linebacker
Mike Matson (Jr., Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS) and 22 tackles (four solo) by linebacker
Taylor Kroger (Sr., Cottonwood, Minn./Lakeview HS).
Augsburg had a chance to tie or win the game in the closing minutes, as Matson forced a fumble on a quarterback rush by Ben Wetzell (So., Wells, Minn./United South Central HS) at the Augsburg 1-yard line, which Kroger recovered in the end zone, forcing a touchback with 2:31 left. But two plays later, an Augsburg pass was intercepted by Bethel's Jon Evans at the Augsburg 35-yard line with 2:20 left, the second of his two interceptions on the day. Bethel ran out the clock to record the victory.
Porta led the Royals on their initial drive of the game, rushing six times for 43 yards as part of a 13-play, 60-yard drive. He scored on a one-yard rush to give the Royals a 7-0 lead.
Augsburg cut into the lead early in the second quarter, as a seven-play, 76-yard drive was capped by the first of two touchdowns from quarterback
David Lange (So., Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins HS) to
Ricky Schreier (Jr., Maplewood, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS), a 36-yarder. The extra point was blocked by Zach Danielson (Jr., Bettendorf, Iowa/Martin County (Fla.) HS).
After a 31-yard field goal by Jason Holmertz to open the third quarter, the Royals took a 17-6 lead on the final play of the period, as Wetzell completed a 10-yard scoring strike to Kyle Lee.
On its next drive, Augsburg was halted at its own 38-yard line, but a fumble on a Bethel punt-return attempt was recovered by the Auggies'
Royce Winford (Fr., Albertville, Minn./Osseo HS) at the Bethel 26-yard line, and five plays later, Lange connected with Schreier on a three-yard touchdown. A two-point conversion pass from Lange to Winford trimmed the Bethel advantage to 17-14.
Bethel's next drive ended with a missed field-goal attempt, but Augsburg couldn't convert on its next drive, setting the stage for the end-of-game drama. Bethel ran a 10-play, 66-yard drive, taking 3:36 off the clock -- with Porta rushing seven times for 42 yards -- before the final run and fumble at the Augsburg 1-yard line was recovered in the end zone by the Auggies.
Augsburg's Lange completed 18-of-32 passes for 164 yards and two scores, but was intercepted twice. Schreier had four catches for 60 yards, and
Andrew Neumann (Jr., Somerset, Wis.) had six catches for 62 yards.
Jason Potts (So., Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) rushed nine times for 27 yards.
Jim Gunderson (Sr., Hastings, Minn.) and
Brandon Rudenick (So., Nicollet, Minn.) had 14 tackles apiece for the Auggies, with Gunderson recording an interception.
Jake Koelln (Sr., Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS) had 10 tackles for Augsburg.
SCOUTING THE OLES: St. Olaf opened the season with seven straight victories, but has dropped its last two contests on the road to the top two teams in the MIAC, falling 63-9 at conference-leader St. John's on Oct. 29 and 49-35 at Concordia-Moorhead last Saturday. The Oles can still clinch a major milestone on Saturday, going for its first eight-win season since 1978.
St. Olaf notes from MIAC's weekly notebook:
St. Olaf senior quarterback Jason Wilsey (Sr., Columbia Heights, Minn.) was 19-for-33 for 334 yards, two TDs and an interception in the Oles' 49-35 loss at No. 12 Concordia-Moorhead. Wilsey led the St. Olaf offense to 533 yards of total offense, 198 more than the Cobbers had allowed against any opponent this year. He has now moved into third all-time in career passing with 3,302 yards. Wilsey needs 281 yards to eclipse the single season record of 2,491 -- set by Keith Karpinski in 1993. He has thrown a school record 21 touchdowns and just six interceptions this fall.
John Davis (Sr., Edina, Minn.) had 5.0 tackles, four solo and two assisted, to eclipse 200 for his career. Davis has a team-best four interceptions this fall and 204.0 tackles in his career. He and 11 other seniors -- Wilsey, Pete Cathcart (Lakeville, Minn.), Anthony Rogers (St. Paul, Minn./Como Park HS), Matt Dean (Apple Valley, Minn.), Trey Williams (Pensacola, Fla.), Tony De La Hunt (Apple Valley, Minn.), Brian Collins (Hudson, Wis.), Andre Conner (Pensacola, Fla.), Jason Holthus (Hopkins, Minn.), Dan Klopp (Duluth, Minn./East HS) and Jake Porter (Woodbury, Minn.) -- will play their last game on Saturday.
A win Saturday would give the senior class 24 wins in their career, which would be the best for any since the class of 1982 who went 26-15. The best record belongs to the 1973 class (31-5).
The Oles have a chance to clinch their first eight-win season since 1978.
